But no one has to invade Canada, the door is always open.

That is true but considering our immigration rules are enforced (for the most part), and really haven't had a lot in the way of terrorist attacks, maybe there's a lesson hidden in there somewhere.

I wonder whose planning to invade the U.S?

With a $716 Billion dollar defense bill, you guys must feel really safe.

We only spend about $20 Billion so now I won't be able to sleep at night.

Thanks Trump.

Plenty of room in Nunavut territory.

Now, excuse me while I go to the John and drop a big McCain.
Who was the idiot who said he'd build a wall and get Mexico to pay for it?

Go rub your bone spurs. You can insult the combat veterans later.

Except that is not what he said is it? He said he would vote to repeal and replace. Not simply repeal. There is a big difference. The Republicans had no replacement and no hope of passing a replacement.

You only spend $20b because we spend $700b. We have to pay to protect you and you’re an enemy as of late so we have to protect you from us. And it costs a tremendous sum to defend you against us with our $700b defense budget.

Also, I have bone spurs. I was really hoping to see bone spur research in the defense budget as it can cause our brave leaders to not be available to serve in the military. Sad.

There is a lot of win in this post.

I don't know about you but I'm perfectly happy to let Americans foot the majority of the bill for our defense. I like being able to walk in to a hospital and not leave with a bill, and have amazing public schools around for my kid to go to.

Thanks guys! Much appreciated!

And if we keep going the way we are with climate change you might be able to use your beaches some time soon too.

We've had a really hot, dry summer. It almost broke above freezing for a few days! ;-)

Although, the sky has been completely blanketed with smoke from forest fires for a few days now. I could stare directly at the sun this morning, it looked like a dimly lit grapefruit. It sure knocks the temp down a few degrees.

Keeping it classy with another "one and run" post. Way to represent your point of view!

i think it is about time Dan stepped in and suspended Jim. we have lines that cannot be crossed for racism and sexism and there should be one on this board for just general civilized behavior. No-one should be allowed to refer to a combat vet with McCain's record and who has terminal cancer like that and stay in the LR. We're all free to disagree with senator McCain - I do on almost everything - but he is an honorable guy who always tries to do what he believes to be right for the US. He's definitely not a sh!t.

A lot of stuff that is said here that would fall into the crosses the line category. I don't agree with you that Jim's comment- while disrespectful and juvenile- is the the thing that is problematic. In general, I find this place to be pretty civilized and self correcting by other members.

For me, and many others, it is his one inflammatory troll post per thread and then he runs away to his safe space that is the thing I find to be most repulsive. He obviously has strong opinions, but perhaps he does not the conviction to have them stand up to scrutiny and debate of the LR. He adds nothing to the conversation except that of the roll of troll.

Suffer Well.

Jim is a coward and goes after an honorable man like McCain because he's imitating another coward who does the same.

This could be a good sign. The Post has been a big Trump supporter. This might be the sign that that tide is turning. When I go to the super-market, I check the tabloids, when they turn it's over.

I can understand why people voted for him, he's a great liar and an excellent con-man. By voting for Trump they defeated Hillary, probably the worst candidate in years. But now that they see what they got, a lying no-nothing narcissist with no idea what he's doing, I don't know how they still think he's making anything great again.

can't both be problematic - the single inflammatory post, and using language like that against someone like John McCain?

i can see how that creates a problem of who can and cannot be insulted in this way in the LR but we can try it and see how it goes.

on the original subject of the thread my initial thoughts were that Trump has already dug in with his anti-McCain comments and there was no way he could say anything complimentary.......but of course there is. it's pretty easy really but would require someone big enough to admit they were wrong about something.

You Canucks spend even less on defense than we do, despite having 1.6 times the population. No wonder Trump thinks you are a threat to US national security.

I agree with you, of course. I live in a socialist paradise where the government has picked up the tab for quality healthcare, education including 6 degrees, a pension for my aging mother, paying me $5k a pop just to have children etc, etc.

Here's the kicker, though:

Perseus wrote:
The spending flies in the face of the Republican's push for smaller government.

for all of that, government spending in the USA is a higher % of GDP than it is in my country (which the US can far less afford, with US gvt debt to GDP 2.5 times higher).

Americans love big government spending, just as long as it isn't wasted on people. With small variations, it has been bi-partisan policy for decades, and is only increasing.

Those of us from un-America do wonder at such priorities.
