I have relatively persistent pain/discomfort in the right glute area. Sometimes throbbing, sometimes aching, sometimes burning, sometimes just fine. Also have tightness/discomfort up the back on the right side, though this is also not always present. Thoughts on what this could be? Been going on for quite some time and has sidelined me. Frustrated.

High hamstring pull? You feel it in your glutes and it radiates into your back.
Did you do an intense run on some hills perchance?
This yoga pose is Awesome for the type of symptoms you're describing:

You might want to see a doctor.

Rule out the lower back as a pain generator before looking elsewhere. Find a McKenzie credentialed physical therapist for a mechanica exam. Good luck.

Hard to tell, but sounds like a pinched nerve in your lower back causing radiating pain in the soft tissue surrounding. If it was me, I'd go to my acupuncture doc first to get inflammation down, then if that doesn't help, I'd head to the orthopedic back specialist to rule out a compressed or herniated disc.

Pinching a nerve is like catching a lychee with chopsticks.
My best guess for OP is myalgic pain in the glute. Reason unknown. I would see a sports physio that has a twitter account and follows Adam Meakins and Paul Westwood.

I agree with the 'go see a doctor'. I currently have a similar challenge. Pain lower right back and pain in glute sometimes further down the leg. My diagnosis is Sciatica. It has been 6 weeks now, I am able to swim and bike with no pain as much as I want. Running is very different, the nerves in the lower back are pretty angry and running 100 m at a time is tough. Things are slowly getting better with good chiropractic treatment and significantly reduced running (3 X 30 min a week, mostly walking).
Thanks, All! I do plan to see an MD. Just looking for some thoughts from Dr. Slowtwitch too because of the wealth of collective experience here.
