Swim Critque: my turn under the microscope

Video is of me swimming on a tether in my pool. I don't do this very often, and I feel a little off balance, legs felt low in the water even with the excess kicking. Breathing is exaggerated because I don't get the wake to breath inside of.

I normally don't kick that much, more of a two beat. I'd estimate the effort level to be around 1:30/100scy.

Videos are recorded separately: right side, left side, front, and front-close up.

Background:

I'm an AOS. I started November 2016. Swam all 2017. I did 2 Oly tris in September (31:xx) and October (41:xx). I did TI for 4 months, then did the Guppy thing for about 6 weeks, until I bought a 6 pack of lessons from a local coach.

I think your stroke looks pretty good. Notng really glaring. At this point, considering that you have good symmetry and a good stroke pattern, just keep working at it with this pattern dialed in. Adding faster and harder work will pay off with speed returns.

Good job on the work you've done so far to get here.

That isn’t how you would swim in a pool/open water/race. Try to get a video while you aren’t swimming with a cord.

I've been trying to figure that out for a year. No video allowed in my normal pool. The local masters groups/tri-club swims are held in pools an hour from my home, and start at some ungodly hour. And its another 30 minutes in the wrong direction from my place of work.

This was the best I could come up with to get some facsimile of my swimming on video. Maybe I just need to practice swimming on the tether more to get more comfortable with it? I dunno.

My pool at home is only 30' long. It takes 3 strokes to get across the pool from a dead stop (with no push off).

My $.02:

* bending knees during the kick, rather than kicking from the hips
* your 'catch' seems delayed; like you're trying to glide rather than begin the catch immediately.

I get it. The thing about the cord is it’ll exaggerate the high elbow catch and bring down the back end at the same time. Also, with the tension it creates through your core, it’s tough to get a good idea of what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong.

Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.
