Macbook hosing bandwidth
My stepson recently bought himself a Macbook Pro, which he has attached to our wireless network. It is, for want of a better way of expressing it, absolutely hosing our internet connection - to the extent that my Android cell can't even manage to stay connected to basic online apps when he's using it. I am almost certain it's related to the Macbook; I work remotely and I'm online all day every day, and this is only an issue when he's home and using that computer. He isn't doing anything that he wasn't before on his PC (no BitTorrent, no hardcore gaming, nothing that logically would be hosing the network or bandwidth).

I'm running a Netgear Nighthawk R7000, on firmware V1.0.5.48_1.1.79 (the router tells me that no update is available). I've set him to lowest upload priority by assigning a QoS policy to the Mac MAC, but I don't have the ability to QoS the downstream traffic. I understand that router is supposed to have dynamic downstream QoS. WMM is turned on. I'm hoping that the QoS update and turning on WMM will help some, but I'm not convinced.

I am completely Mac illiterate, but a bit of time with the Googles has informed me that this seems to be a relatively common problem related to a process called nurlsessionid. Here is what I'm considering as my next step.

Anyone else come across this and have any other insider tips?

He's 21 - plenty old enough to know that if he's going to hose my network with porn, I will be mentioning it to him. Or I'll have his father do it, which is even more embarrassing ;o)

I totally get what you're saying. This is legit just something to do with the Macbook.

Check the iCloud settings. If he is pushing/pulling photos and videos that can do it. Also Youtube and Netflix.

Thanks for the iCloud tip. Are Netflix and YouTube more bandwidth heavy via a Mac interface? I'm trying to identify things that might be different from his PC, which I know he did use for Netflix.

Sorry, I missed that part. No the Mac would be the same for bandwidth.

We have a lot of Apple stuff in our house. I am an IT guy and tried troubleshooting our wireless. We were on an Orbi mesh. It worked well initially until it didn’t (crappy firmware upgrade they didn’t regression test very well). Tried Velop...better but not great. Finally found Eero...works awesome.

From what I can tell google devices (I.e Android) intermixed with apple devices cause problems on a lot of consumer wireless networks. Linksys and Netgear don’t seem to be able to test and regression test their firmware updates very well, so what may work at a point in time goes pear shaped when they patch.

One difference would be youTube or Netflix in 4k vs HD on his new computer vs old one. A lot higher bandwidth. But I'm not convinced that is the issue.

I did look up nurlsessionid and it appears to be associated with ICloud sync. You can disable syncs and set it for on Demand, but again not a great solution.
