I good friend just moved to Irvine and wants to book some surfing lessons but doesn't know where to go, book with, or if there are places to avoid.

Male or Female?

Girl in the Curl in Dana Point run some good programs including private lessons at Doheny Beach (very mellow waves). My girls learned there when they were little with a mix of privates and group lessons.

Monty probably knows some folks...

Duffy? (Just make sure you don’t show up with a stand up paddle board. )

Duffy tells adults to take up another hobby as they will never get good at surfing. His opinion IIRC was that you need to start young.

JD gave you a good one for the ladies, try and stay away from the main surfing beaches, and stick to Dana Point, San Onofre, and some of the long sandy beaches closer to Irvine. But the first two have the mellowest waves, and both have surf schools all summer long. She won't get any grief from locals at those spots learning to surf. Its where most kids who live around here learned and continue to, and old men who are paddling back into the womb too.. (-;

There's a ton of places.. If you're closer up to HB, anywhere 1/4mi or more north of the pier. Be sure that the swell is small, there can be a huge side shore current when it gets bigger.

In Newport, blackies to 28th street is a good learning spot.

There's really no good learning spots in CdM / Laguna.

Dana Point - Doheny is perfect

San Clemente - Old mans or simply pick any one of the trails at san onofre state beach.

TONS of places to learn
