Canyon Speedmax 8.0

Alright people, I'm sure it has been discussed before but I'm either going Cervelo p3 or Canyon 8.0. For the people who have gotten the Canyons in the US how did it go? What kind of duties did you pay? Canyons website has $4,999, is the price savings of direct to consumer lost if you have to pay a duty fee?

I was able to land an SLX 8.0 about a month ago when a few appeared online and thanks to some friends at the company who gave me a heads up. There were no additional charges like duties, I had to pay sales tax. Delivery was pretty fast. Overall a positive experience.

thats great to hear. it seems like you get way more bang for your buck. I wish i was able to ride one first before paying that money.....I guess availability will be the biggest issue? As soon as they come available I'm sure people are ordering.

Indeed, as Bryan says, because USA stock orders are delivered to the USA, there are no duties to pay. (This is also why we can't simply acquire stock from our European counterparts... the duty fees to have them shipped over would make things cost-prohibitive.)

There are several states that are exempt from state tax, but on the contrary there are at current count ten that have effectively clamped down on internet sales, managing to get their percentage (in a move generally called an Amazon tax). Our website lists those states that require state tax.

And finally, as to availability, we expect a small shipment of Speedmax CF SLX 8.0s (as well as 9.0s) sometime in June. Because they come by boat, it's hard for us to provide concrete dates... sometimes they take off late, weather slows progress, etc. So best bet: sign up for our notification system. As soon as they arrive, are QC checked and put into stock, they are made available immediately.

Happy to answer any other questions you may have.

-Jay

Jay, Thanks a lot for this info. I think I am sold on Canyon! just looking at the CF 8.0 or the CF SLX 8.0. Trying to decide if there is enough difference for the upgrade! I hope to be able to order one whenever they become available!

We're expecting the Kerosene Red to be available online around the first week of June. The stealth color option isn't on the radar as yet.

Well, as you probably know, there's a bit of difference in price, but there's also a difference in general fit and functionality (packability, travel capability). The CF models are a touch taller in the headtube and shorter in the top tube, so not as long and low as the SLX. Which is good for those of us that can't (or don't need to) get totally flat-backed, and ride in a position that we can realistically hold for 56 miles or 112 miles. I've been working with Mat Steinmetz on communicating/illustrating some fit capabilities of our SLX—along with our German team of engineers—so we can communicate the variance, and help you determine if the SLX is within your fit roundhouse... or if the CF is a better choice.

By the same token, the CF is going to be much easier to travel with and wrench, since it has a standard 1 1/8 stem/basebar interface, and runs standard direct-mount brakes. You can see Dan's take on the CF 7.0 here:

https://www.slowtwitch.com/...ax_CF_7.0_j6765.html

The SLX certainly isn't the hardest bike among the superbikes to work on or travel with (we have some really clever brake cable guides), but like all superbikes, it takes a fair bit more time and care to travel and/or service it properly. The CF models, on the contrary, are like any other bike you have; remove stem faceplate to pack for travel, and brake service and adjustment is normal and unhidden.

Really, your choice depends upon your fit priorities as an athlete, and maybe your mechanical saavy, depending upon how much you travel, if at all. I'm happy to help on any thoughts above, and beyond... just drop me a DM and we can chat.
