Root canal--when does the pain stop?
Got a root canal last tues. On antibiotics to clear any infection. Sharp throbbing pain that was present pre procedure still there, especially when lying down.

My understanding is once I get a root canal, there is a temporary filling to cover the nerve until I get a crown. Could this filling not be totally sealing--keeping the nerve exposed?

Bummer, I had a root canal about 6 months ago. Really no big deal for me. I had not pain afterward. Of course the Dentist told me, the early they do it the easier it is, and mine was not to bad, so maybe I got lucky. My nerve was split forked but still went fine.

I would call your Oral surgeon back, I don't think you should be having any pain.

First one. Capped it. Got infected murderous pain

Drilled it out. Did it again. All ok for 10 years

Turns out was infecting but leaking in to mouth through gun. No pain but decided to get implant instead

Amazing

Ask the dentist.

Root canals can be a pain. I had one that was good for 10 years, and then it got infected. The pain was way worse than it ever was before. They actually took me in for an emergency visit to drain out the infection.

I’ve had five root canals. My mouth is worth more than my car. Residual pain is not uncommon and differs from person to person. I’ve had pain a month after one and others where there was zero pain on day 1. Id call the surgeon if there is still pain after week two, especially if you are having to take meds for it.

Did they find all the roots on first visit? Usually root canal is multiple visits, sometimes all the roots aren't found and then to measure/pack is methodically.

Retired Endodontist (root canal specialist) here. Did general dentist do the procedure? Was pulp (nerve) alive or dead? Five days of pain not usual. Would call, may need different antibiotic (aerobic/anaerobic bacteria). Canal possibly missed. Highly recommend treatment by specialist, treatment not always as easy as is seems.

Thanks all.

Endodontist did the procedure. Oddly after I typed OP--today is best day.

3D xray showed I had a sinus infection as well. Was put on Amoxicillin-Pot Clavul 875-125 for both.

I'll call in the am.

I've had more than that, and I've never had any residual pain from any of them. None.

I've had three, in one case was in so much pain beforehand that the procedure itself provided instant relief.

X2. This stuff gets very expensive and it's hard to write those checks when you're still in excruciating pain.

*bro fist* I had one like that too... Sadly, I can still recall the whole painful day before I got to see the dentist.

To the OP, for my root canals, I don't think I had residual pain for more than 24hrs.

I got gory details for one of the tooth that had a fracture in it and got infected...

Maybe he did the wrong tooth. Sometimes with a sinus infection and lots of pain, it's hard to determine which tooth it is. Sinus infection can also cause the pain and inflame the nerve and you may not have even needed a root canal.

Same as above for me. The two I had the pain was gone as soon as they were done. They were pretty far along both times so there was quite a ton of pain beforehand.
