NYC Marathon - Qualifying on Time

https://www.tcsnycmarathon.org/...qualifying-standards

"A limited number of time-qualifier spots were available to runners who met the time standards in a non-NYRR race. These spots were filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants who applied with a non-NYRR race qualifying time were placed in the nonguaranteed entry drawing until their time could be verified. Verification was completed prior to the drawing on February 28, 2018. Those who applied with a non-NYRR race qualifying time after the number of spots available had been reached were placed in the non-guaranteed entry drawing."

Does anyone have any idea of what percent make it through on time, but from non-NYRR races?

I'm looking to run the race with my Dad (he and I have a goal to run the 6 majors together) - so I'd like to know that I'm reasonably guaranteed entry. His plan is to run NY via travel agency in 2019 so I'd like to give him some assurance that I'll get in if I post a time so he can pull the trigger himself - otherwise I may go the travel agency route also.

If anyone has any intel on what the odds may be, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The odds are very good. Rumor has it everyone got in that had qualifying time myself included.

I didn’t get into NYC via a half marathon time last year - needed 1:23 and ran 1:21 and change.

I think that your best bet is to get a qualifying time in one of the NYRR halves. For my AG, the time is very doable, and a lot of their races are on flat/fast courses. So if you don't mind an extra trip to NY, and paying a stupid entree fee - I'd go that route.

Next races on the schedule: none at the moment

I'd prefer to stay local (Ottawa Canada) if I can. The NYRR option is likely more expensive than just paying the travel agency tax and going that route l.

This is exactly my plan, down to my target time and AG requirement.

Did you manage to go go back, or get in via another way?

No on trying another way. I did run a marathon in February, which should qualify me for Boston (9 min under), and I hope to qualify for NYC via Boston next April.

Before the Runner's World forums were removed, there was a long thread on qualifying, and everyone from 2015/2016/2017 who applied during the registration period got in (even with a non-NYRR time). Nate is the first case of someone not getting in that I've heard of in a while. So probably not worth it to make an extra trip for a NYRR race. If you want to maximize your chances, get your application in as soon as the lottery period opens since it is first-come first-served for the non-NYRR spots (doesn't matter how far you are below the time).
