Yeah that was a plausible "april fools"
not so foolish, X-Terra did some attempts a while back, and is coming back to it this year in Europe
Couple of years ago, ASO (Tour de France etc.) had a serious look at it, but declined due to poor ROI expectations.

The "bulk" swimrunners are simply not here, still the early adopters are in this now. But definitely worth the try as the fantastic "pioneer, only glad to finish" spirit prevails for now. Reminds me of the end of the 80's beginning of 90's in the tri, damned I'm an old fart !

Anyway, I don't think there is enough money to make for WTC in swimrun at the moment. They would need to massively increase the number of participants in a race, and for that to change its nature and make is a IM circus, far far away from the source of the sport. my 2c
