North Raleigh - Biking Routes
Looking for a decent bike route (planning 4-5 hours) north of Raleigh (staying near North Wake Landfill District Park). Couple loops is fine, especially if there is low traffic.

I can drive if necessary, but would prefer to start from where I'm staying.

have you tried the neuse river greenway trails. There also trails like crabtree trail and walnut creek trail that break off the neuse trail.

I am not from the area so haven't used them before.

I wasn't sure how suited they would be for TT riding on a weekend...many times these types of paths get super busy (especially in nicer weather) and its more headache than anything. I definitely plan to run on the Neuse Trail on Sunday though.

I wouldn't use those on a TT bike, you are correct in your assumption. I'm not to familiar with the Northern part of Raleigh, but a good idea would be to check out the heatmaps on Garmin connect or do some segment searches on Strava. I want to say there may be some group rides out of Inside Out Sports. They might be good to contact.

Depends on what time you hit the greenways. I have been out there right when sunlight breaks and nobody on the greenway. As far as TT bikes, you do come up out of the aerobars a lot on the trails but sometimes that beats the risk of getting on the road with crazy drivers. Inside out sports has group rides every tuesday and thursday leaving their store in Cary at 6pm. I think the Trek store off wake forest road also has a group ride but you may have to join a club for that one.

yo! Welcome to raleigh! There is a group ride leaving tonight at 6 pm from Inside Out Sports if you want to come. The neuse river trail is fun to ride when people are not on it

Check out the raleigh gyros. If you can't meet up with them I think they have routes listed on their site as well. You should be safe if you build your own course following strava heat maps going north. I can't comment on heading south because thats towards the city and traffic, and I don't prefer to do that solo.

If you're just looking for roads to ride, depending on where you're at get yourself to Carpenter Pond, Olive Branch, Cheek, Old Weaver Trail and around there. That should keep on pretty good roads for the most part. You should be able to figure out a loop that keeps you off major roads for the most part or just do an out and back.

From the falls lake damn, you can ride the Greenway all the way to Clayton. That works out to be ~28 miles each way. The Greenway is busiest near the damn, first 2-3 miles can be irritating with oblivious people on the wrong side etc. It can be a little busy around the soccer complex at mile 6.5, but it won't be as busy. There are bathroom at Andersen Point park around mile 17.5. The most scenic parts are between Andersen pont and Clayton, at least that is what I think. I ride the Greenway 2-3 times a week and see people on TT bikes, but the responsible ones sit upright when people are on the trail. On nice, warm spring days parking at the lot by the damn can be tricky after 9am, but there are a ton of other less popular entrances.
