To all the Texans: Dallas Area
I just transferred to the Dallas area (Irving) from up north and am looking for suggestions on where to train in the area. I currently swim at North Lake College, run at Grapevine or White Rock, and have been primarily biking at White Rock though there is only so many times one can go around that loop without getting bored. Can anyone recommend a good triathlon or bike club? Where do you fellow Metroplexers bike? Appreciate any feedback.

Don't live in Dallas anymore but I believe if you try dallastrigeeks.com it would be a start. Also look at ironheadrp.com there may be a link there. Good Luck

Jeff:

I live in Dallas, and do the majority of my rides (2 hrs and less) at White Rock. Joe Pool Lake is another good area. Not nearly as flat as WRL, and has a few good hills. For longer rides, you might consider the Lake Ray Roberts area in Denton (30 minutes or so north of Irving, straight up I35)

Directions: JPL is southwest of Dallas - From Irving, get on Loop 12 ,and head south to Spur 408. Exit I20 West. Exit I20 at 1382 and go left under the bridge. When the 2 lanes merge into one, there will be a turnoff on the right. It's not well-marked, but it'll take you to Visitor's Overlook at Joe Pool. You can park there, and find some very nice rides around the lake).

Tri-clubs in the area include Dallas Tri Geeks (www.dallastrigeeks.com), Dallas Athletes (www.dallasathletes.com) and Fit2Train (www.fit2train.com). The Dallas Athletes are mostly located in Northwest Dallas. Fit2Train is located in the White Rock Lake Area. I'm not sure about the Trigeeks, don't know much about 'em, other than that they exist. There are dozens of bike clubs. Check out the following:

Carrollton Cycling Club - http://www.carrolltoncycling.com/
Greater Dallas Bicyclists - http://gdbclub.org/
Matrix Cycling Club - http://www.matrixcycleclub.org/
Mirage Cycling Team - http://miragecycling.org/
Plano Cycling Club - http://planobicycle.org/
Team Bicycles, Inc. - http://www.mcw-bike-team.org/

I don't know much about any of these groups, because I don't belong to any, but you can probably find a lot of ino at their sites.

Bicycles, Inc is probably the closest one to where you live. They have the group rides from both Bedford and Arlington stores, focusing on pack riding skilles, road race tactics, etc. Leaving 8 a.m. on Sat/10 a.m. on Sun. The ride on Sun is 'recovery ride', less intense than Sat.

The similar ride in Dallas/WRL leaves from RBM at 9 a.m. on Sat/Sun. It involves the riders from various clubs w/ a handful of trigeeks, rec. cyclists. More like a 'hammerfest'. Going out to E/SE, turning around at I-20, approx. 60+/- miles.

Btw, the correct link to Dallas Trigeeks is www.dallastrigeeks.org

I live in Irving and train with fit2train and Dallas Athletes. I learned how to ride with Carrollton Cycling Club.

Another good pool in the area is the Carrollton/Farmers Branch ISD natatorium. It is open until 9 PM for a late workout.
