desire to be the best
in another thread, i asked whether you love your job.

now i'm curious: do you want to be "the best" at your job?

note: "the best" doesn't mean "i give it my best effort", it means that you're renowned in your field as one of the best there is.

the reason i ask is that i'm wondering (prematurely) if i would want to be productive but mediocre at whatever-i-end-up-doing, or if i'd want to be that guy who, at conferences, was referred to and whispered about and idolized. i'm not even sure if the latter is possible for me, but my mind has been wandering. both situations have their upsides and downsides, so i'm wondering what you all think...
