Running Dynamics

How many people use the advanced data collected from either a Garmin Foot pod or the HRM? I ran with my chest strap today, during the last training cycle I mean to use it once a month to track things but I conveniently forgot. I decided to put it back on, cycled with it on Saturday and will swim with it tomorrow.

But how does every used all of the data from running dynamics?

It's worthless data.

I can't say it's been particularly useful but it is occasionally interesting. I've been able use it to spot the point where fatigue starts to affect my form which helped me better understand my hr and pace zones. I've also noted points on a run where I'll tweak my form and then go back and see how it was reflected in the data, sure enough the gizmo picks up changes in the various metrics but it hasn't really mattered much.

When I started with it a few years ago I primarily used it to work on getting my cadence up to 180, but that is now second nature. The only thing I still use it for is the Left-Right GCT balance. Occasionally I favor one side or another (spend more time on Left or Right), and checking on that once in a while helps me focus and bring the balance back to 50-50.

I do not have high hopes for the value of running dynamics, but for curiosity sake I am interested in them. I do not have a device that reads run dynamics due to Garmin's frustrating policy surrounding their dynamics and Bluetooth. I have a garmin 920xt, and I need a new heart rate monitor. I use both Zwift and TrainerRoad so I want said HRM to broadcast Bluetooth to my phone. To satisfy my curiosity I want run dynamics.

My understanding is that Garmin ONLY accepts run dynamics via ANT++ from THEIR HRMRun monitor. As a result, getting a tickr with run dynamics would not work with my watch. If I get a Garmin HRM with run dynamics however, it will not have bluetooth because Garmin is anti bluetooth for whatever reason. SO I cannot have both Bluetooth and run dynamics coming from my HRM. I just find it frustrating that I cannot find a device that will work with both my watch and my phone and I feel like it is due to Garmin's market strategy. Their strategy is costing them a sale of a HRMRun.

Anyway, rant over. I suspect I am not missing out on much WRT to not having run dynamics regardless.

Depends on why you want it.

Top level athlete looking to squeeze out every last min/mile?
Numbers geek that loves to review data instead of netflix benge watching?

For the every day endurance athlete, it's nice to know, but not crucial.

It MIGHT give you insight to issues with form. Say you have problems with your left foot. It might give you insight into contact time for one side if you have a tendency to compensate, etc.

Personally and for my athletes, I care about HR and cadence for the run. Not really keen on power or other metrics for running... yet.
