white noise machines and tinnitus
I suffer from tinnitus in my left ear. For me it is a high pitched whistling sound. I sleep with my left ear to the pillow and also use the radio set with a 20 minute timer when first falling asleep. I have heard that white noise/nature noise machines can help mask the sound as well. Has anyone used one? Does anyone have any other suggestions for dealing with tinnitus?

I wish I only had it in one ear anymore, both ears 24/7, and getting louder all the time. Started like you in one ear, and would come and go. But over time just got progressively worse. And yes I use white noise and it helps. I have heard about a particular head phone you can use that mimics your frequency, but have not tried those as of yet. I can still ignore it most of the time, so until you posted this up I was fine, thanks a lot!!! (-;

Sorry about that. I have heard of people having it suddenly stop. There is hope.

It’s spectacularly annoying. I use a white noise app on my phone- beach waves are the best. I’ve heard of pillows with built in speakers, might be able to broadcast a counter-frequency through those to cancel it at night.

I've had it pretty bad for about 15 years.
I use this white noise/sunrise alarm clock from hatch. Works pretty well to drown out the noise.

Do you have hearing loss too? I just got hearing aids thru the VA and surprisingly, they help with the tinnitus.

You know how many people live with tinnitus and don't even know that they have it?!
I guess it is important for all of us to do an online hearing test from time to time the same like we check our vision, heart or other important health things frequently. It doesn't hurt , doesn't take lots of time and it does give you the information about the current state of your hearing.

There's an even older tinnitus thread, so you're OK

Save your money. Soft music on really low volume has been proven to be much better.

Have suffered for about 12 years. My advice would be try to find the triggers that make it worse and avoid at all costs. I have something producing low noise (tv, music, radio) on all the time now so that I am not concentrating on the tinnitus. Silence makes it much much worse for me as I concentrate it and get frustrated very quickly.

Like you I drift off to sleep listening to music on a timer.

Not about tinnitus per se, but white noise.
I use it for work sometimes with good headphones. Youtube has endless frequencies of noise you can test out. Theres white but also brown, pink...

Theres also natural white noise. The subtle fluctuations make you feel less rushed and more relaxed. I also like the airplane white noise and nature pink noise

I dont know if for tinnitus you could relax distract your ear with certain frequency ranges? If it did would you need headphones or would playing softly on speakers work. Or you maybe could wear high definition ear buds like jabra elite 85t with the hear through option on it so only you hear it but you can hear all the ambient sounds and talking at same time

Yep, this is the way I deal with it. I'v resigned that it's here for life now, so I manage it the least difficult way. I can still hear good, just the tinnitus - especially when surroundings are quiet - can be aggregativing. Soft music from radio and/or TV helps a lot. It doesn't totally get rid of it, but its keeps me from focusing on it - sometimes completely. Different people are affected differently, and while there isn't one solution that fits all, going at it the simplest way is the best imho.

Dealt with it for over 20 years. Seems little worse now. At bedtime drift off with sleep pillow app light waves or rain. Seems to do the trick most of the time. Dr. Mandell on YouTube has some videos on treatment…montivationaldoc may be worth a shot. My internist told me long time ago they don’t know why, so I’ve never been to a specialist. Good luck.

I've dealt with tinnitus forever. Don't bother with a white noise machine(though they are good)...go with Bose Sleep buds. They are simply AWESOME.

No experience trying to sleep with tinnitus, but we are heavy white noise machine users due to everyone being on different sleep schedules. Our go-to is the lectrofan EVO. Several different variations of non-looping noise and volume levels to choose from. IMO - the sound is in its own league when compared against phone apps and most other white noise machines.
