Huh...I wonder why they're describing putting "teeth" on the rotors in that application as well? Prelude to anti-lock brakes?

But yeah...I love the big "cooling scoop" on the side <rolleyes>...

That will be in the next patent application...i.e. a "cover" that isn't stationary, but rotates with the braking disc, with the caliper shaped to allow the "cover" to pass through ;-)

I think the teeth make for nice little serrations, all the better to saw into flesh with !

Looks like something that I'd take off in the first three minutes after getting the new bike home, just after the spoke-mounted reflectors, and just before the spoke protector behind the cassette.

Sure, but it's easily possible to make calipers quite wide ;-)

They also filed a patent on copper rotor construction http://road.cc/...disc-rotors-could-be

Shimano filed another patent application in 2016, published last month, for a disc brake rotor where the braking surfaces are made of copper or a copper alloy with a layer of aluminium or aluminium alloy between them.
“One potential advantage of such a configuration is that the heat conductivity and powerful braking properties of the copper or the copper alloy and the heat dissipation of the aluminium or aluminium alloy are combined,” says Shimano.
The patent application also covers layers of iron or an iron alloy (presumably steel) with layers or copper. No mention is made of the composition of the pads that would be used with these rotors.
