But before his sentencing, Shkreli wrote to Judge Kiyo Matsumoto asking for leniency. “I was a fool. I should have known better,†he wrote.

He was already in prison. Thus the story's mention of his prison-garb outfit at the hearing.

Who knows how contrite he really was, but he is at around that age where a lot of people start to wake up for the next phase of life and begin to mature. He did some absolutely despicable things and even as an evangelist of pacifism I wanted to punch him in that smirky face, but if he can come out of this as a genuinely changed person he'll have the story and intelligence to actually make a meaningfully positive contribution to the world. Or he could just continue smirking and inspiring more memes. His choice.

He's a smart kid and I really do hope that prison will change him for the better. But, he still has one of those faces I'd like to punch. :)

Not quite accurate. He was in a Federal detention facility since having his bail revoked for internet trolling. That's where you go before you've been sentenced in a crime. Now he's going to prison.

Sounds like he's been mouthing off even while he was in detention, so I'm not sure there's any reason to believe he's making any kind of sincere change.

Sounds more like he's scared of 7 years of prison, and just now realizing that's what's in his future.

Slowguy

(insert pithy phrase here...)

He is 34. Close to half of his life is over. I think that's a tad past the point of "starting to mature".

I'm his age, and I'm pretty sure the last time that was a reasonable excuse for my behavior I was maybe 15 or 16.

Long Chile was a silly place.
