potential TT course -- too hilly?

How hilly is too hilly for a 20K TT course? I'm looking at 40ft of climbing per mile. Doable?

That is pretty much pancake flat for some parts of the country. Sub-1% is definitely 1x 56 tooth territory.

Anything is doable.
40 feet per mile is less than 1%, right?
That's very gentle and should not be an issue.

I wouldn't consider 1 mile at 10% pancake flat.

It depends... 40ft/mile spread out is pretty flat. if the elevation gain is 240 in a half mile, then it's a 9.1% grade.
