Finding a cycling coach
I’ve been thinking about getting a cycling coach to help me with my time my time trial race prep. Before I ask what to look for in a coach, I wanted to ask where one even looks for a coach.

I know of groups like Peaks and CTS, but I also see no shortage of highly qualified independent coaches on these forums. How should I start my search?

See who is near you to start, if no one near you looks like they'll be a match, expand your search.

Here's one. She has some time away from cycling so should be open for new clients.

I’ve been with mine for 2 years & very happy....Derek Dalzell.

Get on his site & read to see if it aligns with what you are looking for. He’s also a collegiate cycling coach at Belmont Abbey College.

Thank you (everyone) for such quick and helpful feedback. I'm never surprised, but always awed, by the helpfulness of this community. I'll start looking into the suggestions above. Please feel free to keep posting other referrals though. I'm sure I'm not the only person who will appreciate the suggestions.

I'll plug for my coach and fellow forumite KR Bickel.

He's got numerous stars & stripes jerseys, and he's coached people to stars & stripes jerseys. More pertinently, time trialing is one of his fortes.

I'm the slacker pupil of the bunch, though I've gotten results I wouldn't have dreamed of obtaining when I started, including some good result in time trials.

I'll go ahead and throw someone else into the fire. Owen has been an awesome person to learn from.

In reply to my own post. Here was the ranking of qualities I wanted in a coach that I developed based on the experience of friends and other slowtwitchers.

1. A good communicator - not just articulate, but this needs to be someone you feel comfortable talking to. You need to be able to tell them when work gets crazy, when you're feeling tired, or when you're getting burnt out.

2. Cares about their athletes - when "interviewing" a few coaches I asked them about their other athletes. It didn't really matter what they said. I just cared how they said it. Did they share pride in their athlete's achievements and obsess over what went wrong when they fell short?

3. Had experience in my discipline - I'm pretty new to this and needed more than just workouts. That's why I wanted a person in my corner to coach me through the nuances of time trialing. From warm-ups to pacing, I wanted someone who had been there and had success.

4. Knows the science - seems obvious. What wasn't was that this wound up pretty low on my list. Lots and lots of qualified people on this front. The differentiators (for me) were the first three items

Note, I'm not pro (not even close). I just wanted a coach to help me reach new levels of fitness and personal achievement. In the end, I found a wonderful coach that I've been with for about 18 months. I'm sure your list of priorities may be a little different, but hopefully this approach helps you find someone that checks all the boxes for you!
