Apparently you missed "The Martian".

Saw it. I felt that the treatment of the realities of astrophysics was better in "Interstellar," though in fairness to "The Martian" the discussion of such issues would have bogged down the pace of the movie, especially when it came to how Donald Glover's character -- Rich Purnell, the "steely eyed missile man" (I love that reference to Ron Howard's "Apollo 13" movie :-) -- and how he figured out how to overcome the lack of a conjunction class (the movie doesn't mention the terms "conjunction class" and "opposition class," but that's purely for science geeks anyway) return to Mars to get the crew back to the planet in time to rescue Matt Damon.

And that brings me to my last point: Just how many billions of dollars have we spent to rescue Damon over the course of his movie career? Nine? Ten? ;-)

Sure there is gravity in space if you are near a planet, star, black hole or anything with mass. I guess Trump University failed you again.

Apparently you haven't seen the movie. Also, who the hell are you?

Everything with mass has a gravitational pull.
Also, the ships all have some sort of artificial gravity in them. It wouldnt stop at the ceiling, it would extend to the outside as well and pull the bombs to the ship.

Have you seen the movie? Do you know the backstory to the dog-fighting scenes in A New Hope and how this was a shitty homage to that?

Of course I've seen it and all of that is Irrelevant to what I said.

who's smarter than you're? i'm!

Then wouldn't the gravitational pull from the ship dropping them suck the bombs right back to the bomber ?

Sure, but small masses have small gravitational fields, larger masses more gravity!

I saw the movie and thought it was incredible. Don't understand all of the moaning...

So which one do I have to watch to be up to speed when I go see this one? I lost track at some point.

If you've lived in a cave and have never seen a Star Wars flick, then:

Return of the Jedi
The Force Awakens

They repeat enough of the story lines in each subsequent film that you could probably just watch the new one by itself.

I'm burned out on the recycled plots. They swap in new characters and essentially remake the original movies. How many death stars can they blow up?

Like you, I thought it was pretty good. Not great, but a good time view (personally, I think the franchise has fallen short since "Empire Strikes Back," the best movie of the lot -- and let's not discuss those three execrable Lucas prequels ;-).

One thing, though: the film is getting "ratio'd" at Rotten Tomatoes. It's drawing a 93% critics rating, but about a 66% audience score.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) - Rotten Tomatoes

I didn't realize the audience score was so low. It's down to 56% this morning. It's the exact opposite of the of Justice League.

Saw it in 3D. Not a fan boy, but have seen Episodes 4, 5, 6 a lot of times (and hate calling them that), but could not bear to watch 5 minutes of the first prequel so didn't bother with the others (while ready to suspend disbelief in most instances, I just can't do it when movies try to make a little kid physically and mentally superior to adults), and caught the Force Awakens on cable. That being said, I thought it was a very entertaining movie and had no problems with the plot but I came into it with zero expectations. My wife, who has even less interest in Star Wars than me, absolutely loved it.

My takeaways:
  • Really solid movie, whether part of the ongoing narrative or just watching it by itself with no background.
  • The 3D was by FAR the best I have ever seen it used. Compared to other 3D movies that just use it to throw something here and there at the audience, I felt every scene had a dimension of depth that made it look visually quite stunning (~$350 million production cost well spent IMO).
  • I usually hate movies that over use computer generated special effects, but like with the 3D this may have been the best I have ever seen it done. Except for maybe the ship through the other ships scene, I found it seamless and believable.
  • It was 20 - 30 minutes too long. By the end I was getting ancy to get out of there even though I was enjoying it and was in one of the new theaters with booze and cushy, reclining seats.

Meh. Not the best star wars movie but it's still above the prequels, so I guess that's something.

The biggest thing for me was that this thing was poorly edited. Someone needs to chop 30 mins from this thing. That whole casino and back sequence could have been replaced with "we need some guys to disable the tracker" and had them just board the ship.

I'm just reading this thread as I went to see it last night with my daughter. I haven't seen the prequels. Wasn't horrible but I was falling asleep during all the island scenes. If I was watching on Netflix, I would have stopped and gone to something else. Just didn't care enough about anyone in it to be happy having to sit through it. Cut out the boredom and it would have been a decent action flick.

Killing Laura Dern means I'm less likely to see another -- she was beautiful (but maybe she didn't die?). Killing the Boring Island, King Luke Skywalker, means I'm a bit more likely to see another.

I think a bug indication of how this film, being a Star Wars movie, has been received is that it only has 59 comments in the LR after being out for 3 weeks.

Too lazy to try to look this up on my phone but I would almost guarantee that the thread on Force Awakens had many more comments.

I love Star Wars and so do many of my friends..we talked Force Awakens endlessly before it came out then a fair amount after we all pretty much saw it at least twice in the theater. Not so much the case this time around. I feel like there is one major reason as to why I have no desire to see it again in the theater but I just can't put my finger on it (or it might just be the conbination of all the little things I suppose).

It felt like it was edited quite strangely. Simultaneously I felt like it dragged on too long and at the same time felt like it was disjointed and missing something, as if it had a longer director's cut that they did a poor job editing to get down to an acceptable theatrical length. As someone who's interested in the philosophical and existential elements of spirituality and deconstructing religion & finding purpose and meaning in the process (yes, total nerd shit, but I find it interesting), the temple scenes and Luke's battling of inner demons was cool, even if heavy handed and not nearly as nuanced as what a real person goes through in that place. Not that I should expect more than that from a Disney film that appeals to an action and fanboy crowd, but the inclusion of those elements was cool to see in a culture that's becoming less tied to organized religion but still occupied with elements of spirituality, purpose, and religion-free faith.

I probably should go back and watch the movies in the machete order, as I really hadn't watched any of them except episode 1 until a couple of years ago and still haven't really watched any thoroughly except Force Awakens, Rogue One, and Last Jedi. It would behoove me to watch them in machete order and get a feel for the whole narrative, actually paying attention to them.

I cannot saw this movie. It’s in Netflix now. I liked it.

Also didn’t get how the bombers were dropping their bombs.

Anyway, it wasn’t amazing. It didn’t have to be. I heard it sucked and it didn’t suck.

How does Danny Hart sit down with balls that big?

Finally saw this film on Netflix.

Holy fuck was this a terrible film.

Just so many many things. All has been discussed before.

The writing was horrid. Embarrassingly so.

The casting choices continue to be a shit show.

The novelization explains that away as them being “magnetobombs.” Actually the book gave just enough context to everything that was crap in the movie...so easily could have been saved with better editing and 5-10 minutes of the background info in the book.
