Richard Bike Mart in Dallas, Texas. - Fitting
Quote | Reply
Does anyone here have any experience with the fitting process at RBM in Texas? I bought my Specialized there this year but did not get fit. They sell Tri bikes (Cervelo, QR, Griffen etc) but they use the Serotta fit system. Is that okay as far as getting a good fit on a Tri bike?

Thanks,

See Kelly at the RBM store on Campbell and Coit, he specializes in Tri bike fits and does not use the Serotta system. He is an ex tri guy, has a degree in exercise physiology and is studying to be a Chiropractor.

I bought my P2k there last year. I bought is from one of the assistant managers I think. It was an older man (maybe 40s-50s). He seemed like he would be perfect for setting up people on their first bike. After getting the feel for his fitting knowledge, I thanked him and took my bike home for a self fit with the articles on this site, a digital camera and a trainer.

I would still be interested in getting an expert opinion on my fit, but I haven't heard of anyone I would trust in TX. Are there any FIST certified people in TX?

Tom,

Glenn Rawlinson is in the Dallas area. He's a recent transplant from the San Fran area, which is why I know him. He's a good resource for bike fit.

As to being FIST certified, using the Serotta system, etc. I would suggest worrying less about the particular system a fitter uses and more about how good the fitter is since even the best systems are only as good as the person using them.

There are a couple of more alternatives too. If you are going towards Shreveport, you can stop in and see John Cobb, or call the shop and find out when he is going to be in Dallas.

As another resource, there is a local triathlon coach who is USA Cycling Fit Level I and II certified. He specializes in bike fit for triathlons. His name is Ahmed Zaher and his information can be found at www.playtri.com

I just heard that John Cobb moved to Tyler Texas which is about 1 1/2 hours away from Dallas. I am going there for a fitting tomorrow.

Yes, there is a Bicycle Sports Tyler. As far as RBM, I use them on a limited basis. A little pricy if you ask me, but they carry more tri-stuff than anyone else in the Dallas area. And I've heard unless you buy a bike from them they are less than willing (or reluctant) to assist you in fitting. I bought my first tri-bike from them back in 1999. Can't remember the salesman's name, but there was no fitting other than a visual done. We rode around the parking lot, etc., and that was it.

Richardson Bike Mart: I think that they have gotten better about fitting any bikes, not just the bikes you buy there. Now that they have 1-2 fit specialists, they actually spend a couple of hours taking measurements and tweaking to get the fit.

John Cobb: He does have a spot in Tyler that he works out of...but I don't know how long it is going to stay open. I heard they were down-sizing due to too much rapid growth and that facility might be going away. Maybe Pam can update us on the latest news after her fit.

I just came back from a fitting with John C. in Tyler. I live northwest of Ft. Worth and drove 2.5 hrs for the fitting. I was amazed. You owe it to yourself to get correctly fitted by the master.

Don't think they are down sizing, the guys told me they are moving to a bigger facility in Tyler. We were joking about what type of excuses they could come up with to get out of helping doing the move.

Went on my first post fit ride today. Did the same route I did on Sunday. Sunday it took 1 hour 50 minutes, today 1 hour 26 minutes. There was more wind on Sunday but I still felt really happy when I was done.
