43% of evacuees plan to return to NO.

44% plan to settle somewhere else.

66% of those who plan to settle somewhere else will stay in Houston.

70% do not have a savings or checking account.

80% have no one that they can stay with until they get back on their feet.

60% had family incomes of less than $20,000 last year.

50% have children younger than 18.

12.5% were unemployed when the storm hit.

70% have no insurance to cover their losses.

50% had no health insurance.

40% suffered from heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or were physically disabled.

33% who stayed said they never heard the mandatory order to evacuate issued by the mayor the day before the storm hit.

28% said they heard the order but did not understand what they were to do.

36% acknowledged they heard the order, understood it but did not leave.

In hindsight, 56 percent said they could have evacuated while 42 percent said it was impossible.

33% of the interviewees said they had been trapped in their homes and had to be rescued.

40% spent at least a day living outdoors on the street.

40% were rescued by the Coast Guard, National Guard, police officers or firefighters.

25% had friends or neighbors helped them to safety.

24% managed to reach safe havens on their own.

33% were trapped in the city without their prescription drugs.

20% managed to survive the storm, only to be threatened or assaulted by other survivors in the chaos that followed Katrina.
