Swimsuit, sports bra and wetsuit recommendations for the novice, voluptuous triathlete
Quote | Reply
Hello,
This is my first post on SlowTwitch. Please forgive me if I make any protocol errors.

I've done some unofficial triathlons I the past year - marathon coach set them up for cross training. This year I attempted the mermaid triathlon and California Sprint Triathlon.

I am missing my strength training because of sports bras - I can't jump without flaying open my shoulders. this affects my running too. with run, I can add a second sports bra and then wrap an ace bandage around me to mitigate. I cannot do this with tri.

I am an unusual size and have to go to specialty stores. I have had sports bras custom made but they were useless. I wear a 36 K. That is not a typo. I'm 5'9" and hour glass shaped. My athletic 'talent' is weight lifting. I've been marathoning - run & x-country ski - for about 7 years now. I used to play volleyball and softball.

My Current gear:
I have to pin my Zoot Suit with safety pins. Under my Zoot Suit I wear a sports bra that doesn't quite fit and spills out of the sides and another tank-bra that doesn't really fit but it helps tie things down.

I'm renting a Blue Seventy MENS wetsuit. I have to take it back but I want something that may be cut a little more generously. It works but if I can leverage any space across the bustline I'd like to do so. I have straps cutting into my shoulders horribly and the sides of my breasts are not being spared.

Please note, I do not plan to have a reduction any time in the next decade.

Thank you for any suggestions you can make. Have a great day!

For swimwear, know SwimOutlet.com has an entire Plus Size section - I've loved everything I've gotten from them (good prices and good service).

I used to work at a Curves gym where a lot of my clients were super-curvy - they loved the JustMySize for sports bras.

And regarding wetsuits, you might like the DeSoto Black Pearl wetsuit - the key perk is that it's two piece, so you can get something that addresses different sizes, if you need a bigger top or whatnot. I hadn't worn anything by them before and just sent the my measurements and they helped me get the right size.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

If you are located in Southern California, you can actually go to DeSoto, in the San Diego area, to try on the wetsuit. As Agilcipher said, the 2 piece wetsuit is ideal for a woman who is a different size on top than on the bottom. Coral Reef, located in Orange County does custom wetsuits (had to do this for my sister as she is short and wide). As for the tri-tops and bouncing, kind of have to find larger sized jerseys, and wearing a 2-piece might work better. I'd have to ask a friend about the sports bras that work for her, as she is short 5'3"ish, but is very large on top.

Do yourself a favor and wear a two piece suit that work for your body rather than one that halfway fits. I am no longer a big chested woman but have bras of all makes and manufacturers. Have you tried North Face Bounce B Gone or any from the Victorias Secret sport line? I bought the Bounce B Gone for two girlfriends who are 36 dd and 38f. They both said the bra is comfortable and liberating. Both used to wear two sport bra to work out in and their shoulders show it. I have one too and like the fit except for the high racer back. You can find them at REI or at 6pm.com on the cheap.
As previously suggested, Swimoutlet.com is a great site to find swimwear. I wear suits from Sugoi because they last long in chlorine, don't ride up my crotch or ass and hold my breasts in place, unlike the others that I used to wear. Some of the larger endowed women wear the suits with pads that look as if they are breastfeeding. Those suits have no support so do not bother with them.

I wear a GG cup and use an Enell to run in (I use bodyglide for the seams). For tris I just wore it under a Kiwami one piece, always need to avoid any shelf style tri tops or suits. For swimsuits etc try http://www.bravissimo.com they have a good selection to beyond K cup. Good luck.

X2 on Enell being the real deal. The story goes that 3 women in Whitefish, Montana got sick of bras that didn't fit athletic, well-endowed women, so they made their own. And a new company was born. The reason this bra works is in the back side. They also guarantee to fit ANY BODY! It may cost more, but they custom build for mastectomies, etc. as well.[/img]

As far as wetsuits go Blue Seventy does make Athena womens wetsuits which are more generously cut where women tend to be curvier.

When I was a bigger size, I swore by Enell. It was truly a life saver. I went from wearing two bras (ow, the chafing!) to one Enell and it was a life changer! I am a lot more contained now and wear Moving Comfort Juno - not sure how far those sizes go but I find it is good for high impact.

For the wetsuit, you might call DeSoto and talk to Emilio or Tracy. Worst case scenario is that perhaps they could make you a two piece that is measured to you.

I used to have the Iroman women's cut/Athena wetsuit and really liked it.

For bras, have you tried Title 9 sports?

They rate bras by support, but I don't know if they carry K cups.

Also, one of my swim buddies is voluptuous and she likes the zoot wetsuits. They're really stretchy so they cover everything.

Another friend who is curvy but not top heavy likes the Orca suits.
