Bike/Tri shop in the Boston area
Hi guys, I'll be going to Boston in December and while I'm there I'll try to get myself a new bike (I live in Italy now). I was thinking about getting a Cervelo Dual and I was looking for a bike shop which could also help me getting a proper fit.

Any ideas? I'm willing to go anywhere (i.e. distance is not an issue). I was thinking of driving down to Cary, NC to go to InsideOut and I might still do that, but should there be anything like it up north it would save me long hours on I95.
Thanks
Filippo

International Bike - ask for Craig Gaulzetti (sp?)

Belmont Wheelworks - huge store... more roadies than tri-geeks, but will still do you right.

FastSplits in Arlington - newer store, but owned and managed by several area Triathletes. Karen Smyers is the president...

These are all listed in Dan's shop guide methinks.

I got my bike from one of their stores and was very happy with the service I received. I don't think they carry Cervelo bike though.

If you go to Wheelworks, make sure you talk to someone who is a tri specialist. I bought my current road bike, which I use for training and racing, at Wheelworks, and when I bought it I wasn't offered a fitting or anything else. The total of the fitting they gave me was, "Yeah, that looks right" without making any adjustments. This was AFTER I told them I would be using the bike for triathlon racing and wanted to make sure the bike fit properly. (I did everything except wave money in the guy's face.)

I went in again a few months later looking for a wetsuit, and I hooked up with one of the tri club guys. He spent about an hour with me while I tried on wetsuits, made recommendations, and finally got me into the right suit with the right fit.

I'm not trying to steer you away from Wheelworks, as they are one of the largest bike shops in town, will give you a reasonable price, and, frankly, are probably the best shop in town, but make sure that you talk to one of the tri specialists, not just a salesman.

The FastSplits people are very knowledgeable, and since they are still getting established, may be a little flexible on prices.

thank you guys! I really appreciate it. I think I'll try FastSplits first and then the other two. My priority (along with getting the bike) is to get a proper fitting because next year in Lanzarote I plan to spend the whole time on the aerobars, so I better be comfy. I also wanna get a new wetsuit, one that fits me right, not the michelin man thing I wore this year, so I definitely need knowledgeable tri people.

FastSplits does seem to be the only tri-specific store in the area, but other retailers do carry tri gear. I recently purchased an Ironman wetsuit from FastSplits and was happy with the service I received. I did get 10% off, which wasn't bad, but as mentioned earlier, prices are at full retail. Their bike inventory was strictly tri - Guru, Aegis, Cervelo, plus one or two more that I forgot. You may want to call/email ahead to check on their bike inventory... Good Luck

filippo

also check out fitwerx up in vermont. about a 3.5hr drive from boston but very worth it. (fitwerx.com). the shop is owned and operated buy ian and sarah. in my opinion (for what ever that is worth) they are the most knowledgeable bike fit people around! I have nothing to do with their shop as i am simply a very satisfied customer. I have driven up from boston many times as i think their input and work is extremely valuable. fitwerx is also a cervelo dealer. good luck!

Fillipo -

Check out my other post (10/23)- I visited there a couple of weeks ago and they seemed low on stock (shoe sizes and wetsuit sizes specifically). As for the bike-fitting service, they are FIST certified but didn't seem to have a fit bike around. They only had a limited number of bikes in the store (and not everything as listed on the website).

Wheelworks are local and very established - they support a large New England tri team and are definitely beginning to cater for the triathlete. International Bicycle Center are also reasonably close by and again sponsor one of the other large local area triathlon teams.

Enjoy your trip!

I bought my Cervelo a few years ago at Belmont Wheelworks. I had a very good experience with the sale and the fit. They had a guy there named Fabio who had a great feel for tri fit, but I do not know if he is still there.

I race in Vermont alot and have talked to the Fitwerks people and they seem to really know thier stuff and offer very personalized fit--but on the expensive side. Might be worth it for major fit issues or a complete overhaul. Tim
