Ironman 70.3 Japan Centrair (Tokoname)
I was wondering if any of the ST community raced in the Ironman 70.3 Japan this year?
I'm resident in Japan and I'm considering my race options for next season. I seem to recall seeing a few negative comments about the race, but I think that was before the bike course was changed for the 2013 race.
I'd be grateful if anyone could share their experience or point me in the direction of any race reports.
Many thanks.

I did not do the race but several of my Japanese tri friends suggested that there are better racing options in Japan.

I'd have to x2 Dev on this one.

Several of my friends who did IM Japan this year also have done the 70.3 and unfortunately, although this race report was written 3 years ago, it appears that things haven't changed much:

Thanks for the replies guys. They both confirm most things I've read and heard about it - it's very hard to find any positive feedback about the race.

Just to be clear, I am only transmitting 2nd hand feedback that there are other races in Japan that are better quality. If you can fly to race, and need to race in June, the Hawaii 70.3 could be a nice getaway...or Challenge Taiwan (half) in April. I've heard some good reports about Challenge Taiwan. The Taiwan 70.3 I also got good feedback on, but unfortunately, last year (Nov) it was turned into a duathlon due to crazy rain making the swim unsafe. Not sure if KQ/Tremblant Qual are important to you (do you know if Japan 70.3 has KQ slots again)?

The qualifying slots probably aren't a concern for me realistically at the moment, although I want them to be a few years down the road! Again though, there's a lack of information on the event's website (both Japanese and English) - no mention of event date, when applications open or KQ information. Although, on the Ironman homepage it shows June 1st as the event date for 2014.
I did the ironman-distance Baramon King race in Nagasaki Prefecture this year and last year and couldn't fault it at all, but I'm looking for a shorter event for next year, before heading back to Baramon King in 2015.

Thanks again

I know someone who did it last year and was there primarily for Kona spots...(maybe 2 years ago)
Her feedback was extremely technical bike course, not her strength but overall it was a good event. Good enough to be back again but I do believe it is quite hard to get too...
Think it was near sold out as well and the full IM too, so i am quite sure the race will still be on and registration will open soon?
Good luck! Why not Putrajaya 70.3 in April?

Thanks for the great race report, and congratulations on your result.
Good luck in Kona - I'm planning on getting there myself one day.
P.S. I remember seeing you at Baramon King in 2012

Bit short of a "blog" but raced it back in 2017 (https://www.bw-tri.com/...course-of-MANY-turns). Let me know if you have any specific questions. Logistically it is a bit of a pain and you will spend quite a bit of time day prior to race getting to/from T1. It is a multi transition area with Start/T1 together, T2 somewhere else, and then point to point run finishing in a different location.

Edit: Guess it helps if I include the link: https://www.bw-tri.com/...course-of-MANY-turns
