A lad did 3.57 at Busso a few weeks back - Its a flat course but was a warm and windy day. The lead AGers regularly go close to 4, but I think getting under is pretty rare.

Yeah it wasn't a fast day, so 3.57 was good. Who was that? Was he racing open or AG?

Does anyone know the fastest overall time by a non-professional over the 70.3 half-ironman?
Would anyone have broken 4hrs as an age grouper?

The AGers I know that are are on or around 4 hours are all working part time and training full time like pros.

Brett Johnson. He was racing ag, the open guys were all under 4 I think. I'm still sore, I thought i had the ag race wrapped up until Brett came in.

ah, slowtwitch. the only place where you get shit for racing a 3:58 half as an amateur.

Times in tri are irrelevant. Course maybe short. possible draft fest. swim maybe current assisted. bike maybe superbike. shoes maybe nike % bouncer fly

It would be nice if we had an 'era' calculator for tri, based off of tech change phases
* pre 1990 - the real heros
* 1990- 2000 aero bars, wetsuits come to play
* 2000-2015 carbon molded bike era.
* 2015+ superbike and carbon shoe era

Not sure. I guess for some the reality of being "pro" isn't that enticing. They go from being a top AGer who always gets on the podium to someone who finishes bottom of the pack. Being a "slow" pro brings very little in the way of money of recognition, you would probably attract more sponsors and attention as a fast AGer.

You forgot global Warming, which means lower Air density and in general stronger winds. And it doesn’t matter as much if there’s a headwind since Air density is lower. On the other hand, EPO was a pretty big thing in endurance sports in the 90’s.
What’s your point?
Of course times matter, if you have the fastest time, you’ve won...
Just compare times from the same era with each other. Let’s make a comparison to F1, are all the drivers putting in times that are faster than ever before? - yes. Does that mean all the drivers that were before them? - no. Best way to compare athletes across different eras is to see How dominant they were compared to the competition.

yes that is what Im trying to say. F1 not a great example, they had to set many rules to prevent the cars from literally flying off the track - good youtube series i was watching on f1 through the years. such as the front 2 wheel car (Tyrrell P34), etc..

That for a given physical performance today, the time in a HIM could easily be 10 minutes faster than it was 30 years ago if you have a superbike, skinsuit, and Vaporfly4%s.

Yes, in any given race the fastest time wins. But it's hard to understate how massive some of the technology improvements have been. I started in the mid-to-late 90s and I constantly astounded at how much better the tech is.

So to your point, breaking 4 hrs is arbitrary (it doesn't matter), more interesting question would be what's the largest margin of victory for an amateur in a major 70.3 race? That would tell us much more about dominance than what the time was. Because pretty much anytime you hear about a really fast winning time in some race, there were a lot of really fast times in the race (meaning the course was either short or they had massively favorable conditions) not because of some incredibly dominant performance by with the winner resulting in a huge margin of victory.

This guys seems to beat the competition by 10 mins plus on a regular basis.
