swimwear during workouts
so i'm just wondering what some of the guys wear in the pool during workouts. i learned the hard way that chlorine destroys tri racing shorts and my running shorts still seem/feel too baggy--and get torn up by the chlorine. i refuse to subject the public to seeing me in a traditional "speedo". you kids have any suggestions? brand names and where i could get them would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Whineyass,

Speedo makes some streamlined swim trunks which are squareleg - i.e the legs come down to where your... um... johnson is. Not your traditional plum-smuggler type of brief. Check 'em out at http://www.speedousa.com/...=26947&clrIndx=3

Speedo also makes "Jammers" http://www.speedousa.com/...=29447&clrIndx=3 which are a little more modest as well.

I go to Acadamy and buy Jammer style offerings. At $20-25 a pair, the price is right for "disposable" swim gear. They are nothing fancy, but serve the purpose and I don't worry about the chlorine eating them up.

I think the 2 speedos recommended from the previous poster area little high and the other one is a little long. Speedo makes a perfect pair available from tri-zone that I always wear for swimming that is just right: http://www.tri-zone.com/Catalog/ClothesIndex.html

Having already had one rather unpleasant experience with malignant Melanoma a few years back, I've decided that it's OK to look like the biggest dork at the pool if it affords a little more protection. If others are so inclined, these suits work really well:

They're chlorine-resistant and offer the equivalent of SPF50+ protection. They come in short-sleeve and long-sleeve versions, too.

I've found the Nike Reversible Mesh Brief to work great for me. I use a cheap lycra, spandex, nylon, water polo or whatever suit is on sale underneath and then double up with the Mesh Brief on top. It provides great drag, lasts forever against the chlorine, sun, sitting on the pool deck, etc....

You can find it for like $35-45 I think which sounds like a lot, but I've had mine for nearly 3 years now and it still looks nearly brand new (minus the logo peeling off a little).

Suck it up and wear that Speedo brief. If you ain't pretty in that Speedo, do something about it. If you're hairy, shave it. If you've got a gut and/or lovehandles, lose 'em. A gut hangin' over Speedo jammers looks just as bad as briefs. Remember, your a triathlete!

I've been wearing my Speedo training suits (3" sides) for two years and after losing 25 lbs. since late April '03, I'm just starting to look like I deserve to wear them. It's a great motivator.
