This week: I am traveling M through Th, arriving in Oregon late Thursday night. I will be playing it by ear based on hotel fitness centers (this morning), staying with an aunt and uncle one night, have a day in Salt Lake City with my brother (hiking I hope!), and then I'll be in Oregon. The goal is to not have eating issues on the road trip.

I did okay for the most part. I had one bad day and a couple other days that were hard because I was tired and ended up eating sugar to give me energy while I drove (yes, I know I could have had dried fruit or something but I ate candy) and the candy only spiked my anxiety. Anyway, we made it without too much damage. I did a good job of getting workouts in for all the travel... it meant getting up pretty early, but doing that and then napping in the car was crucial for keeping my anxiety down.

M - 8 mi run [Cleveland, OH]
T - 3 mi run [Omaha, NE]
W - 8 mi run + 1 hr elliptical + lifting + 2 hour hike [Salt Lake City, Utah - this was our no-travel day]
T - 8 mi run + 3 mi walk [Salt Lake City, Utah]
F - 6.5 mi run + 50 min. elliptical
S - 8 mi run + 50 min. stairstepper
S - 8 mi run + 3 mi walk

Totals: 50 mi run, 12 mi walk, 2h50 "other"

Goals this week: swim 3x (1 done), run 5x (1 done), check out some of the local cycling.
Things at my new house are going pretty well and I feel ok with food there (i.e., no anxiety about bingeing) so I am pleased about that. One of the differences about my place versus being at my parents' house is that I am in control of what is in the house at my place. My mom keeps snacky stuff that I tend to binge on.

Hope everyone is doing well. AP, I won't make it to Leadman this weekend but I wish you the best! MistressK, I hope the hand is still healing. Tri3, I am excited to hear how your week was for swimming.

Short-course yards (25yd pool, set up for the age group kids)
Long-course meters (ideal for me, the olympic-sized pools, for me the outdoor pool!)

TC - Swim the Suck is a 10mi swim/race in the Tennessee River Gorge near Suck Creek, just outside Chattanooga, TN. It's part of River Rocks, a whole outdoor celebration and events. It's downstream, though the current depends on the flow of the dam & varies greatly. The water is usually around low 70's. Everyone has a kayak escort as it is an open river! Field is limited to around 50-60. http://www.swimthesuck10mile.com

Aware,
those are some great yards you got in! I can't wait to hear how you liked the Suck. That is on my definite to do list.

I had another good swim week, topping 30K yds for the first time. It looked like this:
Mon-5 mile lake ows (1,3,5 easy; 2,4 ns)
Tues-4600 lcm
Wed-rest day
Thurs-5600 lcm (6x800, 1-easy, 2-pull, 3-ns)
Fri-2000 scy (masters, main set inc. 4x50 on :55; 4x100 on 1:45; 4x150 on 2:15; 1-4 desc)
Sat-rest day
Sun-4.4 mile river ows

This week I'm aiming for another 30k that includes a 9x800 lcm and a 6 mile ows, then it's a cut back week for some lake swim races.

Also got the clearance from my PT to do a "long" run of a 3 mile jog. My big run week this week is jogging 3 times for a total of 5 miles. It's progress

No coasting in running and no crying in baseball

last week's goals:

This week: I am at a conference all week in Chicago, so training will be limited which sucks as Leadman is 10 days away. Eeep! Oh well, taper time right? haha ha... (cries softly in the corner)
Run 3x (once in IL hopefully!) -> DONE. In fact the running is feeling AWESOME these days.
Swim 3x (the hotel has a 25yd lap pool, one swim already done [2000yd] - man 25yd pools are odd-feeling - and trying to do flip turns when it's barely 3.5' deep is even odder-feeling - this may be a good thing as my swim is by far my weakest link heading into Leadman...) -> DONE and man those SCY pools suck balls.
Bike - I'll be honest and call the big fat goose egg now... ZERO. I might luck out and get a short spin/brick on Sat or Sun but I think I'd rather spend the time with the fam instead. We'll see. -> This was easy DONE :-)

This week: Taper/Race week - short & speedy & fresh - watch the food intake (CHI left me feeling F-A-T)
M: Run 35' aerobic; easy walk/elliptical/stretch (keep legs loose) -> DONE
T: Spin 60' on the trainer, some pick-ups i.e.: 5' on/5' off, etc.
W: Run 40' aerobic with 30" strides
R: ??? Open to suggestions.
F: Run 35' aerobic with pick-ups; Drive to Bend.
Sat: RACE DAY BABY! Bend Octoberfest to follow.
Sun: OFF.

I have come to the conclusion that I am very badly undertrained for this race. Hopefully the altitude does not become a problem. Oh well, que sera, sera. All I can control is me & my race.

Race week for me last week
M- off
Tues- run 30 min, yoga 1hr, swim 1700yds
Weds- ride 1 hr
Thurs- OW swim 15 min, run 15 min
Fri-off-- drove to and from Malibu from the OC to pickup race packet--drive home took about 3 hours vs <1.5 hrs to get there.
Sat-Raced Malibu Nautica Triathlon "International" distance. woke up at 2 am to get ready +s swim and transitons, --s bike (stopped to find helmet sticker stuck in my brakes) & run (more of walk than run, just wasn't feeling it). Overall slower than last year, but swim was about 10 minutes faster, good current + better swim training this year.
Sun- sleep--as I didn't sleep much the night before the race.

This week goals-
swim--3x
bike--1x maybe
run- 2-3x
recover and decide what to do next.
find a job.

You ladies are A+ AWESOME!!!

Tigerchick - congrats on the move to Oregon. I am sooo jealous! And you are a running machine!

Ended my first tri season two weeks ago with a sprint. Finished MOP. Swim was ok but I need to calm down and treat open water swimming like a bike race - position, position, position! Bike went well but I come from a road racing/track background so that part is easy for me. I still find Running after riding to be an interesting experience and this means more running and bricks!

Training is now geared toward improving my weaknesses for next year - improve that run and swim! Doing the Army 10miler in DC on 10/21 so I need to build up my run volume.

Goals for last week:
Swim 3x - done with nice focus on improving body position
Run 5x - done including a nice hilly 7.5 miles on Sunday
No bike

Next week:
Run 5x with long run of 8mi
Swim 3x with some focus on technique
Bike 1x maybe 30mile to remind legs how to pedal!

Happy training all!

What is this "swim" of which you write? I am trying to win the Murphy's Law award for being most undertrained on a swim... ;-)

AP,
How much of an altitude change are you doing? I went from 150 to 5400 ft for a swim race, and really felt it even though I had a couple of days to acclimate. Not much you can do about it now other than be prepared for the experience. For me, both swimming and hiking, it felt as though I just could not get any air. The only thing that helped was to slow down (even stop) until I got my breathing under control, and not panic. And I felt tired and really crappy afterwards. But who doesn't after a race? ;-)

For Thurs, two days out from a race I like to take completely off, get to bed early and be rested Friday am, 'cause I know race day ain't gonna be like that. Then day before I do a little sbr at the race site to loosen up (like 15-20 minutes of each).

Have a great race. It looks epic!

Man I am So Jealous of your trip. Yeah, dad, blah blah, yeah boring blah, blah but I love just putting the rubber on the road. Guess I'm a gypsy at heart. Are you in Eugene by any chance? We once considered moving there but headed south instead as I wasn't sure I could be mentally sane with the weather there. :)

I am at SL, the race starts ~4600ft and maxes out at 6000ft (but only for a short while then we scream downhill for 30+miles). The only time I ever had a problem with altitude was at Monty's - we did a run up above 7000' and I just couldn't breathe at all, I could walk and slow trot, but not actually run uphill. I've never had a problem riding, and have ridden to the top of one of the local mountains (~1500m = ~4800ft) with zero problems. It will be the roughest part of the day for me and I am prepared to slowly finish that climb. The run is back at 3600ft and I've been OK running at that altitude. We get in the evening before the race so no time to adjust! Wheee! :-)

Kathy, I am in Corvallis/Philomath.

So far so good here. No rain yet because it is still technically summer...

He named his program Total Aversion (tm)

I checked out a local ride this AM - I did Mary's Peak. Yesterday my advisor (who is also outdoorsy) was saying "the altitude is going to kill you." It went to 3700 feet. I don't know what he was thinking...

yeah I am fine up to a certain level... I notice it at ~6000ft, but am pretty useless above 7000ft. 4700, while up there, is not that bad.
