Menopause effects
Quote | Reply
I know a number of you are in (or going through) menopause and I was hoping to get some hopefully BDTD's. I thought I was going through menopause (no cycles and I was very regular at 28 days) and wicked hot flashes (all throughout the day and soaking the sheets at night) and then my daughter achieved menarche. I'm back to constant bleeding (it was like this just before my cycles stopped, with 4-day breaks but not heavy bleeding) and no hot flashes but what is really bothering me is my ability to recover. It seems like a paltry 100km ride or anything over 3 hours totally depletes me. I'm going to be doing 6 hour rides soon (after my HIM in 2 weeks) and I'm worried I'm going to take a week to recover from those. I did a 2-hour ride Sat, a 3.5-hour ride Sun and a 1-hr ride Tuesday and today is the first day my legs have felt okay and I think my run should be decent today.

Any ideas to recover better? Is this related to menopause (quasi in my case)? I'll be 52 in a couple weeks FWIW, have 4 kids and nursed them all through toddlerhood (and beyond for some) if that makes any difference.

I don't know what BDTD's are, but by virtue of our same age, my guess is this is related to menopause. I just completed training in blood work and I was stunned to see that my sex hormones basically did not exist! No news to any woman that the body is heavily hormone driven, but when I saw estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone levels of near zero, it explained the hair-sleep loss, joint pain, and hot flashes over the course of the year. No restful sleep = no recovery.

Perhaps look for progesterone cream, with at least 3%. It's available OTC in the USA. Since I think you live in the Caribbean Islands, it may be difficult to find; maybe get your trusty mules to bring it. For the rest of hormone replacement therapy, you will have to see your doctor for a prescription. I am in week 1 of an estrogen-progesterone patch and it has made a big difference. If you can sleep, then you can train.

I think maybe it is BTDT (Been there, done that).

I also was zero on my hormones & went the pellet route for about a year. Now, I will be switching to a patch or cream since it is easier to control dosing.

Sorry Sally. BTDT= been there, done that. That is interesting about sleep. I used to have very not good sleep but seem to wake before the alarm as long as I get to bed at a decent hour. I hate the idea of putting hormones into my body when nature is getting rid of them but I'll look into them more. thanks!

Well this seems to fall in line with your theory, Sally, for the first time since last November or so, I have EWCM and had a crampy period (instead of day after day of old blood) which says to me the hormones kicked in (didn't take anything) and my legs feel GREAT! I'd forgotten what it was like to be able to recover from a ride. Wow! i feel like banging out ride after ride and running every day but I'm tapering this week. Things that make you go hmmmmm..... :)

Three choices as I see it when menopause causes negative side effects;
1. do nothing and feel really old.
2. take 12 prescription medicines for symptoms such as dementia, joint pain, and sleep loss.
3. replace what used to be there and feel younger, longer.

Glad to hear that you are feeling better! Now go out and train ;-)
