A Friend and running partner is lost
Yesterday I was running with my longtime running partner--my golden retriever--Strider when he started staggering and couldn't go on. I eventually had to carry him to the nearest road to flag down a car to get help. We got him to the vet and to make a long story short, he is gone. The vets never could figure out what happened. At first they thought it was heat stroke, but ruled that out (It was not too hot here in denver yesterday). It appears he may have had some kind of other problem that was exasparated by the run. When I started doing triathlons 4 years ago--as a non-runner I would take him out with me. He has been with me throughout my entire triathlon journey. We were preparing for the Great Floridian Ironman (our/my first ironman.) I will now run it in honor of my partner. Telling our children was hard but a good friend gave me some good advice this morning. He said that one of the reasons we have pets is to teach our children about death. That doesn't make it any easier on me, but though this is hard to learn it can still be good.

Our consolation is that he died doing his favorite thing in the world--running with his master. We will miss him greatly.

In memory of Strider.

I am so sorry to hear about this. Animals are such a source of unconditional love and companionship. Their place is our lives is so valuable. I have two cats and they are great friends and companions. I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm sure everyone who reads this feels your loss through things they've lost, and that hurts. I hope things are better for you soon.

So sorry for the loss of a best friend and running partner. Nothing more special than a friend to share the good runs along with the bad, always with their bounding enthusiasm. He'll be with you in spirit as you cross the line at GFT.

Take care and thanks for sharing. Brought back good memories of my former running partner, the best damn spotted dog in the world, Beamer.

Dude, your story makes me think of when I lost my old bestest pal Attilla the Bun. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your pal.

I have finally gotten enough to have another furry terror Trixie (a black and white neutered female dutch dwarf rabbit) after four years. I realised how much our furry friends enhance our lives while I chase the little bugger around. But I will always miss little Attilla.

And you're definitely right- your pal did go doing the thing he loved best- he had a blessed life and death.

So, so sorry to hear of your loss.

On your final point -- helping children with the unbearable and unfathomable -- the single most touching children's book I ever read was aimed at kids about your daughter's age. It's called simply Dog Heaven (author: Cynthia Rylant).

It starts with the following text...

When dogs go to Heaven,

They don't need wings

because God knows that

dogs love running best.

He gives them fields. Fields and fields and fields.

The illustrations are simple, and perfect. Under these opening lines is a dog -- which could well be Strider -- loping through a field with all the time in the world and a very contented smile on his face.

Again, so sorry.

whenever i hear a story like this i think of the loss of 'mr. bojangles,' dog, in song: "after 20 years he still grieves."

when i think of all the hardest things in my life, losing my dog (which i do about once every other year, me having several dogs) is the hardest. in fact i wrote about the loss of one of them:

http://www.slowtwitch.com/mainheadings/lifestyle/grete.html

two months ago i lost zola, grete's twin sister. in my own life, no grief compares to it. i never get over it.

Hi,

I know how this feels, having lost Bruno (my first Rottweiler) some years ago. While no one in our family smokes he died of lung cancer. Sadly you can't take a Rottweiler out with you for running. I tried it a few times but after then, whenever he saw me take on my running shoes he immediately closed his eyes and fell asleep.

Two years after his death my wife wife convinced me to get a new one. Now we have Konrad who makes us all happy.

regards,

Frank

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain.

No words can ever replace the daily happiness you lost, but do take solace in how much joy YOU gave HIM during his life. Truly sorry to hear your story and I hope the healing is quick, but the memories never disappear.

all the best to you and your family in their time of need. pets are priceless gems that are a gift from above.

you took wonderful care of strider and he returned the admiration. its not easy, but try to take solace in the fact that he had a wonderful life and both your families life and striders life were better due to the relationship.

kind regards,
greg

I'm sorry for your loss. We just got our family's first dog last year and she is a golden. When she was about six months I started taking her out for runs, about 2 or 3 miles. Since the beginning of summer she hasn't wanted to run at all. Is this normal and how far should you expect a dog to be able to run?

I'm sorry for your loss. As the very proud owner of a yellow lab, at 10 no longer a viable running partner, I can not even imagaine her not being there to greet me as I come home from a long run, ready to go to the park and get her exercise (she would be great as the swimmer in the relay of a tri).

Good luck in the GFT. I know Strider will be running with you the whole way.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I am sure that it must have been a trying experience. I have 3 dogs myself, A black lab, A Sheltie and a Shephard. I almost lost my shephard a few years ago when he was struck by a car. I can only imagine. Though I don't train with my doggies, it's amazing how animals can become such a part of ones life. I would sacrafice almost anything for my dogs. I know that kind of love.

I wish you the best.

If you don't mind, I thought I post a little story about how I met my running partner this last May...

Last week my wife and I took a vacation/research trip to Virginia, North Carolina, & Tennessee. Basically this was a week of collecting for her (ecologist) and a week of training for me (the weather could have been better). So last Friday we arrive at our 3rd campground. My wife and her lab partners hop in the car and head to the "woods" to find more samples. I head off for a 6 mile run. Leaving the campground I head over to a small summer home subdivision. As I enter the subdivision a small "hound dog" starts following me. I say nothing and she doesn't make any noise or approach closely, just the pitter patter of feet 10' behind me. After I complete the subdivision loop I stop and tell the dog to go home, stay, no, etc... and start running again. She follows me down a hill and falls a little behind, I break for it on the slope and try to get around the corner out of sight. I make it, but pretty soon I hear the pitter patter of little feet again right behind me. So I complete the last 4 miles of my run with dog in tow and arrive back at the campground. I'll be the first to admit I have no experience with pets or kids, so I didn't pay much attention to her. I went about my business at camp and she just roamed around near by. I figured eventually she would get bored and go home. I hopped in the lake and went for a 40 minute swim (man was that nice!). When I returned, there was the dog, still in our camp. I've still got a couple of hours to kill before Chris gets back so I head out for a bike ride. The puppy follows me out of the campground, so I head back towards the subdivision, figuring I could ditch her easy on the bike, near her home. She revs up to full gallop and has little trouble keeping up with me on the flats. A little downhill and I pull away, thinking, "Ha! She's almost home, headed the right way, perfect." Then I reach a short climb, I slow into the low teens and here comes the puppy bounding along up behind me again. When I reach the subdivision where we first met, 2 hours ago, and 6 miles ago, I take off on another decline and lose her for good. So that, I thought, was my dog story...

That evening when Chris returned we headed to town for pizza and I told everyone my dog story. As we drive back into the campground, someone says, hey there's a dog. Is that the one? (Keep in mind we are 2 miles from were I met and dropped her.) Sure enough it was her and she promptly started following the car back to our camp. When we got out Chris took a good look at her and it was obvious (to her. I was oblivious.) that she was a stray. No collar, ticks all over, mange, but cute as a button, and real calm. Chris fed her a little and she wandered off for the night. And that I thought was the epilogue of my dog story...

So, the next morning Chris and I head out for a short run. We stop at the restrooms. When Chris steps out, I motion for her to turn around. There's the puppy again, with her shoes laced up (apparently) and ready for another run. We do a short 2 miles with the puppy happily trailing behind. And that was the beginning of our partnership with Jordan.

Jordan is back on Long Island with us now. Our landlord agreed to let us keep her, since we've been responsible tenants. We took her to the vet and got all the pills and potions to tack care of the ear mites, mange, whip worm, and hook worm she'd aquired while on her own. We pulled about 50 ticks off her over the first few days and gave her two baths. She doesn't have heartworm, hallelujah. The vet thinks she is about 8 months old. And she is a darling. Very well mannered, loves to cuddle (she thinks she is a 35 lb. lap dog), doesn't bark, and seems to be taking to dog-training very well. We think she is a Mountain View Cur Hound mix.

Last night we went for our first run together with a leash. She did fantastic. The pace was cake for her. Our run is just a trot for her and she didn't even start to pant or get tired at the end. I think she'll take to our running schedule (up to 6 miles is probably a good limit) instantly.

I've never had a pet before, so this is all new territory for me, but I just couldn't understand how or why someone could abandon such a beautiful well-behaved puppy. Hopefully, we can provide her with the good home she deserves.

My golden would have run forever--and now maybe he is. The lonest we ever did was 21 miles--(I ran 21 miles) he probably did a marathon since he ran off leash and would run back and forth.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. It has touched me.

I feel your pain. I had a Golden Retreiver named Grafton who was my constant companion from the age of seven weeks until 14 I/2 yrs. We lived in then in Ontario cottage country area and he was my cross country ski partner. When I got divorced I told my ex that she could keep the house and furniture but there was no way in hell that I was giving her the dog.

I still remember the day I had to take him to the vet for the final time. I cried like a baby and am not ashamed to admit it.

I now have another wife and a black lab retreiver but I have a painting of Grafton that hangs in my office.

I too am sorry to hear about Strider. As you point out, he went the way most of us hope to: while having fun.

I was struck by your comment that he was with you throughout your multisport career. I hadn't realized that my Golden has been with me throughout mine as well. Now I have a whole new appreciation for that relationship.

Take care.

So, so sorry for your sudden loss and the grief your family will endure. One thing that has helped our family deal with similar losses is to immediately, and constantly, rehearse our favorite memories with our lost pet, in our case Ben. Tell the stories over and over again, the same stories, it doesn't matter. Just as children love to be told the story of the day of their birth or whatever, they love to reminisce about their pets. It doesn't make the hurt go away, but it tempers it with the joy of the love that animal brought us, and helps the whole family focus on the happy times when he was alive, not the sad times now that he's gone. The kids - and we - end up smiling through their/our tears. Try it with your kids, it will help. Again, so sorry.

Several major religions take the view that animals do not go to heaven because they don't have a soul. Well, I'm sorry, but I don't want to go to heaven if it has no dogs or cats or other animals. I've been in Florida for 13 years so I'm prepared for the alternative. :),

Bergy: Sorry to hear this man. Gorgeous dog. You were lucky to have had such a handsome companion. I'm sure HE'S in heaven. :)

I have a 5 1/2 month lab and I asked the vet when I could start to run with her and I was told not before she is at least one year old and her growth plates have developed/closed.

You might want to check with your vet.

Good grief, that is soo tough. I actually think the kids take it better than we do.

Though, my daughter was nearly histerical when I decapitated one of our cats in the refrigerator door. I just about had a major coronary event. It was an accident of course, but I close the door gently now. We still have three of them and a dog. We have also gone through 4 cockatiels, about 50 mice, one rabbit, one iguana, 5 or 6 various fish species, and one horse that almost put me in bankruptcy court.
