Got to try it out some more last night. I could get a few free pedals before the thing would shoot out from under me. Worked best for me to get going using the truck for balance then by the time I got to the end I could ride off into the sunset....ok maybe not the sunset.

Legsnwere too tired from my regular ride today to try it again. Maybe tomorrow after the half marathon and a few beers.

Yeah I juggle.

I can even eat an apple while juggling. Never got to 4 balls though just three. I can juggle knives and stuff too.

I learned when I was around 5 or so (which is over 30 years ago now), but one of the things I remember my dad showing me was how to control the "dismounts", both forward and behind the wheel. That way I didn't end up having the thing just shoot out from under me causing a bad crash. Basically as soon as you feel the balance getting out of whack, you just step off either forward or behind the wheel as you grab the seat. I remember doing a lot of controlled mounting and dismounting while holding onto a garage door.

I don't remember it taking a long time to learn, but then again I was 5 and lots of things were easier then.

My husband learned how to ride when he was 27 or so (was mandatory in order to marry into my family). :-) As others have stated, once he was able to get the balance down a bit and get a short stretch of pedal revs together, it started clicking pretty quickly. Don't give up - you'll have it in nailed in no time.

what about in a doorway, on rollers?

A uni on rollers would be really, really hard. The way the uni wheel snakes from side to side when you ride would be exacerbated on the rollers and you'd turn 90 degrees faster than you could say "oh shit!" When I finally got it I rode along my garage in the alley behind my house. Long and straight.

Someone else mentioned this, but i found that visualizing that the uni seatpost extending up my spine really helped. Keeping your back straight makes balancing easier.

love my sons commentary "Tim Andrus, trying to join the circus but he can't because he can't ride a unicycle uphill yet."

The kids on my block went through a series of fads during our early teens that included things such as skateboards and yoyos. One of the kids broke his bike and decided to make a unicycle out of it. My dad actually found a used one for me, and I became fairly proficient at riding it. I still have a unicycle, and I occasionally take it out to demonstrate to myself that I can still ride it. I'm no longer proficient at free mounts, but I can still make it around the block.

Regarding a unicycle as a training tool for triathlon, I am dubious. It is my humble opinion that rollers are a more useful test of balance and bike handling skills.

Terry "The UniGeezer" Peterson has done it. It's on video at the link below.

I'd just cheat and get the training wheel one like Peter & Davy

I learned when I was in high school, although I haven't ridden one since then. What worked for me was propping myself against something to get on the pedals and in a start position, and then use two poles for balance. Initially, I needed the poles the entire time but I gradually learned to use them less and less until I could actually ride.

The bitch of riding a unicycles is that you can fall 360 degrees. On a bike, you only have to balance in two directions, left and right.
