I had asthma all my life, & a sinus infection every 6 weeks once I started tri (doc said it was the pool)
After a life time of pumps and meds, I found a woman doc who put both myself & my son on a natural product, haven't used a pump in months.

Approved by the Lung Association - that was enough for me to try, (and give to my 4yr old!) and it worked wonders.

PM if you like more info. Good luck, asthma sucks!

You said this was happening as you closed up the house. Is it possible that you have a moisture/condensation issue that is creating the environment for mold to grow? That could be triggering your "colds."

Also, have you tried rinsing your nasal cavity with saltwater using a neti pot? That really helped me with allergies.

Same happened to me. Flew to KS and with the heater running in the house and the house closed up and the drastic temp difference (55f to 25f), I had a raging cold and stuffed head and coughing up crap within 4 days. After 2 days it was better, but not gone and I'm now back in NorCal and am pretty much back to normal.

Yeah mine was mostly clear, but persistent, and with more volume than usual. I noticed it most at night when trying to sleep (resulting in poor sleep). Even tried a humidifier/dehumidifer, vicks, breathe-rights... the breathe-rights helped a lot but just couldn't clear it. Musta had it for oh 3 months or so. Funny thing too, when I think back, swimming actually made it feel better - and I wonder if I was just spewing snot everywhere... ewwww... :-(

Again, just something to check if it lasts longer than a month...

Thanks for all the responses. I am off to my GP and then an allergist. Maybe GP will tell me it's a sinus infection and I can get some drugs to clear this once and for all but if not then I am banking on the allergist to figure out why I am having these issues.

For now I will be spending more time in the pool because that is the only thing that makes my sinus feel better, at least for the short term. I do feel bad for the other people in the pool though!!

I feel for all of you that struggle with allergies and asthma. Together they make it difficult live somedays, nevermind train and compete!

I have been through all of this and honestly, I think you need to talk to your GP about a referral to a specialist. If you are using ventolin in response to attacks, then your asthma is NOT under control. Asthma has two parts to it...general inflammation and the bronchospasms you feel as attacks. What you are doing with your meds is reacting to the bronchospasms instead of preventing them in the first place.

My asthma is 'under control' most of the time without meds, but physical activity will set it off. How much activity depends on the day. On the rare occasion, usually when my allergies are really bad, I'll start wheezing just walking around. I never figured out my 'trigger', as it depends on the day. If my lungs are really irritated, things that don't normally set off my asthma suddenly might. I finally when to a doctor when I first started running, and was put on singular. The singular helped block my reaction to anything that would bother my lungs or trigger an attack. So initially, I was able to run without suffering an attack and over time, the overall inflammation in my lungs dropped. I really didn't think my breathing was that bad until I had been on meds for a month or two. It was a startling difference. I was on Singular for a few years, but was still having an issue with constriction at high effort levels, so I was put on advair. Advair has an ingredient that prevents attacks as well as a steroid that actively reduces inflammation. I've been on this combo since, and the only time I've ever even felt tightness in my chest was if I went off the meds for a few days.

So having to use my rescue inhaler, even if it's mostly just when I'm in the bush or sick, is a sign my asthma isn't under control? I shouldn't be having asthma attacks at all?

Hmmm.

The last couple of hikes I led (after my new protocol put in place) were in places without much pine and I cheated and didn't take the Benadryl, just my Ventolin. I felt pretty okay though the Ventolin made things optimal which I thought was pretty good and under control to me but I guess that's still not good. Am leading a hike/snowshoe to a wilderness area this weekend so we'll see how it does, though I'm also building into a chest cold now which should make activity in general suck - going to start the Flovent tonight.

I recently found out that some asthma meds (like Flovent) trigger mania in other bipolar people, though not me (that's a whole other story though)....my psychiatrist does also want to know about the asthma meds I take. I see him again in February so I'll ask him if he has any concerns about me taking any specific asthma meds and then talk to my GP about a referral from there.

This!

You have probably had asthma for years and didn't know it. It can be a chronic, low level inflammation that with age and loss of conditioning and in certain environments will flare up. I wasn't diagnosed until age 62. I didn't get proper treatment until I was 67. Because it is somewhat benign (compared to cancer or pneumonia) it is too often neglected. Scads of people die every year from asthma attacks. At IM Florida I had an attack and thought I was on my last ride, collapsing by the side of the road. My heart rate must have been 190 or more, and I felt like I was breathing through a very small straw. Now I take my meds regularly and am running and cycling. Btw, swimming in a chlorinated pool is very hard on asthma patients. Try to limit your exposure. Always carry your inhaler on runs or hikes. City air is terrible. Read the studies on what it does to lung function and heart function! Spend as much time training in an unpolluted (meaning triggers as well as actual air pollution) as possible. Get FIT! Fat is bad for everyone.

Good luck
