Calf Muscle Cramp

Just finished my first tri of this year. Came off the bike and started through transition when I had a severe cramp in each calf. I was tempted to walk, but I ran through it and it went away after a mile and a half. (My first mile was pathetic (10 mins) - shuffling my feet while being passed by many people). My question is: Any advice on how to prevent this? Also, I now have a knot in each calf two days after the event. I am trying to just work through it. After warming up, the pain wasn't too noticeable when I worked out today. Any advice is appreciated.
