West Houston Women's Training Groups???
STWers,

My most awesome and stellar MOM is hammering away at her training. She just recently raced the Trek Women's Series event in Wisconsin (3-4 years in a row now) and is back at it and targeting a few events in the houston area in the fall (when it's not deathly humidex outside). She does all of her training on her own aside from spin class and i've been getting after her to ride outside more and do some intervals in on HER bike as well as find some folks to run with (swim she does at Lifetime Fitness which is hugely convenient but SUCKS for supporting triathlon, besides the race series they put on).

So i'm curious if any of you have any advice that i might be able to pass along to her about training with a women's group on the west side of houston. She works in katy (grand prkwy and westheimer prkwy area) so as to give you a general idea of where she's at.

Thanks VERY VERY MUCH! ....and my Mom thanks you to!

Not sure if this is still going on but Bicycle World & Fitness (Diary Ashford/Memorial) had a women's specific training group Friday monrings. Also, when the wife and I ride the Addicks Dam/Bush Park multi-use trails after work (there are lots of trees/shade to keep you out of direct sunlight in Bush Park), we usually see small groups of 1-3 women training on tri-bikes and road bikes setup for tri. I would suggest that you mom consider adding the Bush Park into her training program which might allow her to link up with the other athletes.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i'll mention it. She rides thru the park on some of the trails, she only occasionally hops out on the open road.

thanks!

Here are a few things to check out...

HRTC group workouts: http://www.houstonracing.com/?page_id=309 - namely the Wednesday night bricks. Jill and Joe DeVay are our parents-ish age and are great hosts of the Wednesday night group. They also have long runs from her house through Hershey Park on Saturday's. It is a good group of people and very non-intimidating.

Also, here is a pretty good listing of workouts by geographic area: NW Zone (includes Katy area): http://www.houstonracing.com/...NW-Training-Zone.pdf, SW Zone (includes Sugar Land): http://www.houstonracing.com/...tunitieshrtc-sw1.pdf.

I second the Bicycle World and Fitness recommendation as well - I'm not entirely sure what the Memorial Location has going on, but I know the have some women's specific and beginner friendly rides going on. Bike Barn out of Katy is also hosting a new Bike Barn tri club so there may be some group opportunities that way too.

She may want to check out Katy Fit (www.katyfit.com). We meet Saturday am at the gazebo @ Terry Hershey park (Memorial between Eldridge and Hwy 6), and are currently training for Houston Full or Half Marathon. I participate in various tri's in the Houston area and run with KatyFit. others.

If she's interested in wanting to get together with others for longer runs, this may be an option (even is she's not interested in participating in the Houston Half or Full Marathon). Lots of runners, so it's easy to find a group who runs the same pace. Check out the website or forward me a PM.

No problem! Glad I could help. I was on the HRTC board for 2 years, so I have a little insight :-)
