With all the discussions of race size and triathlon popularity, it is funny I came across this article in my "old triathlon stuff box". I have taken only certain sections and deleted the dates/years.
"Triathlons have attracted millionaites approaching their mid life crisis. The demographics of triathlon participants did read like the mailing list of the Stanford Business School. The sport however, is becoming increasingly popular and populist.
Judging by the numbers alone, triathlon may indeed be the sport of the decade.
By the end of the year both participants and races had increased by 50 percent.
The triathlon is becoming an entrepreneur's delight with the potential for a far greater margin of profit that was ever garnered by running. But the potential for profit brings accelerated growth and therefore a greater potential for problems."
By the way, the above chosen quotes taken from the Mar/Apr 1984 issue of Ultrasport. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
