If you are doing DEXA for bone density your doc has to specifically also order body fat - it is a separate pass with the machine. (I had it done last summer). It is awesome, just difficult to now figure out where I am - don't really want to go get radiated again....
Wow, thanks for telling me that ... I need the DEXA scan as a baseline because I have a lot of risk factors for osteoporosis and I just assumed I'd get the body fat % along with it because other people had.

Lots of the impedance ones can be affected by water weight, time of the month, etc. too. I used to just use an impedance scale once a month, I followed the same diet/exercise plan for 3 days before measuring myself (so that food/sweat etc were not an issue).

And yes, I did see the numbers go down, but it was relative to what the original estimate was.

There are some places online that you can check too

(I think this was one I tried a few months ago-I think it might overestimate)

DEXA is fabulous...but the only problem is that once you go DEXA you will never want to go back...

...oh that and it also told me I was 10% fatter than any of the other machines!!

The University of Texas has one that you can pay ~$90 for testing, but that is in Austin and I am in Houston. I have done it twice in the past 5 years though. I would do it much more often if it were closer.
