I am embarrassed to be asking this question, but how else will I get proper guidance?
In college I was taught to blow air out of your nose during flip turns so as to keep water out. That makes sense. But when I am working out, I do get a "full nose" - whether running, biking, or swimming. We didn't really think much of it in college, but now I wonder about proper nose etiquette.
Should I use a nose clip? Won't that cause coughing issues?
Should I bring a hanky to stop and blow periodically? No one else seems to..
I don't want to be the gross out kid that no one wants to share a lane with, so please know that I am concerned and not making up a gross post. :\ I personally am more concerned with the patches (hormonal or pain meds) that I see on the bottom of the pool, but I have overheard some of the geriatric swimmers complain about one guy concerning the nose thing.
Thanks for any help!!!
have you any idea what goes on in a public swimming pool? when you're doing lengths, do you ever see any of the kids playing in the other end get out to go to the bathroom? for that matter, do you ever see any of the geriatric swimmers do this? how about the moms with their children that look no more than a few months old. sure, they have "swimming" diapers on, but really, do you honestly thing those keep everything in? how about all the bandaids floating around at the bottom of the pool? have you ever taken a real good look at the bottom of the pool and/ or around the edges where "things" collect? i don't care how clean your public pool is, there's some gross stuff in there. just the other day i was sharing a lane with an older person who, as he was swimming along doing a breast stroke, had a bandaid flopping open and closed on the side of his waist. as the bandaid flopped open, i could see there was what looked to be a hole the size of a nickel underneath it (no, i wasn't trying to see it, but it was impossible to not see it when i was passing him). i thought i was going to be sick to my stomach. while i would refrain from purposely blowing my nose in the water, if a bit of mucous comes out of your nose now and then while you're swimming, i don't think it makes much difference in the grand scheme of things. all you can really do is try not to think about it too much, try no to drink too much of the water, take a good shower after you swim, and hope like hell that there is a LOT of chlorine in there!

Chlorine kills anything. Don't worry about any snot comin' out or being proper. Your training, man, you just gotta do your thing. I usually have to "clear everything out" at the beginning of a practice because of allergies and probably other people do too.
I wouldn't suggest a nose clip. I have to use them when I'm using this stroke technique snorkle from Finis but other than for that, I never found them beneficial.
I work for public health, and I mentioned to one of our environmental health inspectors one day that I was going to the local pool at lunch for a swim. "Come on in here," he said, motioning me into his office, "and let me tell you about public swimming pools." I told him that was quite all right, that I just didn't want to know the kinds of things they've found in public pools. Public pools are nasty. Like the other poster said, you never see anybody get out of the pool to go to the bathroom. There are little kids in many pools in diapers. Think that diaper catches everything? Look closely at the bottom and you'll have your answer. Go ahead and blow your nose. I can assure you that your mucuous ain't the worst thing in that pool.

Well, I get out of the pool and go to the bathroom to take a leak! People look at me really funny when I do too...
Gee. I thought I was the only one. I feel, strangely enough, that I'm doing my duty as a decent human being, when I get out of the pool to pee.
