For the first time in my life, I visited the Fox News web site the day after the debate to see what spin they put on it, and I saw that article. I couldn't believe that Kerry had actually said the quotes in the article ("metrosexual"?!?).

Fox News is a scumbag organization. The fact that their chief political correspondent would actually write that, post it, and no editor questioned it speaks volumes for the quality of their organization. "Fair and balanced". What a crock.

I did note that even Fox News couldn't spin their way to a good Bush debate performance.

actually, I checked their site once when they said that 'Of course, Air France will not put armed men on board of their plane, just security guys'...

I emailed them to let them know that the GIGN (groupe d'intervention de la gendarmerie nationale) was a bunch of really bad mofos (a group of elite fighters) that you send only for the really dangerous stuff, equivalent to the navy seals etc.

They emailed back and said they were sorry for the mistake and corrected it in the article...that surprised me a lot (that doesn't mean I watch fox news now but it shows they have at least one fair journalist)

Fox news is a rag. But they sure managed to fess up a lot quicker than CBS did, didn't they? If it had been Rather's article, we would have heard 10 days of justification- "the article is made-up, but really indicative of higher truths."

This is a bad time for liberals to be picking on Fox news, Ken.

Yeah, probably true. Fox mistakenly posted an article written as a joke and not intended for publication, then removed it and immediately apologized for the mix-up. CBS deliberately foisted questionable documents on the American public in an attempt to influence the presidential election, then attempted desperately to maintain their core accusation long after the documents had been discredited as forgeries.

Apples and oranges, indeed.

CBS is not my most popular network right now. First, the whole document scandal with Bush's records. Now, they pull the 60-minutes story about WMD's, which apparently was highly critical of the current administration. The reasoning was that they didn't want to air the report so close to the election....uhh....why did they air the other story then?

The difference is that the Fox news piece was supposed to be satire and accidentally got posted as news. When the error was realized, it was retracted, and apology issued. CBS took a forgery, didn't verify its sources, claimed it was news and ran with it for two weeks before claiming that the document might be a forgery, but was truthful anyway.

Why is it that defenders of Fox News feel that a valid defense is "CBS is worse"? Who gives a rat's ass about CBS, when the subject is Fox News?

Comparing things is a good way to find out the truth. It's called rational inquiry. Not something seen at CBS, or, for that matter, in the vast majority of positions that its affiliate, Senator Kerry, takes on Iraq.

Since when do you care about the truth?

Because I'm biased (having went through SEAL training in '83, and having also spent a lot of time as a Navy corpsman with Marine reconnaissance forces), I'm going to have to disagree, naturally, with the GIGN being equivalent to SEAL teams (especially Navy Special Warfare Development Group...also known as Team 6).

I was impressed, though, with your fellows from 2nd REP of the Legion, however. The ones that went on to commando training. We did some observation of their training in French Guyana some years back. Good guys.

I'm sure they'd acquit themselves well in battle. If they were ever allowed to fight ;-)

If I recall correctly, Fox News didn't bother to apologize when they were caught publicizing a doctored photo showing Kerry and Jane Fonda together, despite the fact that it came from a highly dubious source. So I think a little bit of a double-standard is at work here.

I know a Fox News producer. She admits that the organization is a joke and that the notion of unbiasedness is a complete farce. Not that it's not obvious, but when you hear it from the horse's mouth, it's even more convincing.

I said before, even if Fox leans to the right, so what? The right/republicans have to contend with a lot of bullshit like CBS (and the liberal bias of practically all conventional media outlets w/ the exception of Fox), Michael Moore, The UN, The music and entertainment industry is notoriously liberal and anti-Bush 'bush-hitler' crowd, Moveon.org, etc etc.

The right has some victories; Talkradio, Swiftvets, favorable reporting from Fox, 'the pajamahadeenin the blogosphere' the CBS blunder and others.

The notion that the left needs to have a monopoly on all forms of media to advance their message is crazy, I think that the battle to win hearts and minds is pretty evenly matched.

I don't get why everyone makes this a partisan issue. ALL American media is a big steaming pile of shit. This includes the 3 majors, as well as the cable outlets.

Our news outlets are not NEWS outlets, they are mouthpieces for a specific narrow agenda reflecting corporate ownership. That's all. They practice the age-old art of divide and rule, not uniting the nation to come up with a list of national priorities, nor do they do a single thing about ensuring transparency or accountability in our government. CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, Fox, MSNBC, you name them, they all suck hard.

Rupert Murdoch, GE, et al are laughing with tears running down their faces all the way to the bank.

GIGN is part of the Gendarmerie, not the army, not the navy etc.
so they get involved in situations like terrorism, people taken ostages, etc. but not war situation.
They have been VERY successful in liberating ostages and dealing with terrorists.
For instance they just got the cheif of ETA (liberation of the basque country). This group has been plaguing the region for 30 years...
and guess what, we didn't have to invade a country to fix the problem...
