Motivation at work
Mine is clearly lacking! Working on a huge project and not finding the answers or really knowing what I'm doing - but it needs to be done yesterday apparently. Frustrating with everyone else too buried to help it make sense and a condescending boss that doesn't GET that some people don't just GET IT when it comes to complicated financials in insurance. Uft.

I'm ranting, but how do you all stay motivated or get your head back in the game when it hurts or when it's frustrating? (I figure this might tie back in to somewhere between miles 60 and 112 and 18 to 24 of Silverman, too...) I'm a shameless stealer of mantras and methodologies.

At least three days a week I train during work hours. I work a little extra at the start and end of the days so I can take a few hours to train during. Breaks it up nicely for me.

Other than that, I got nothing. Look at me now... on ST!

Sooo....you're asking a bunch of peeps who hang out on ST all day how to get motivated for work? Seems like you might be asking the wrong crowd ;-)

For me, honestly, it comes down to panic. It sounds terrible but I work best under deadline and under fire. If something isn't due for a week, I'll work on it the day before and freak out because I didn't get my shit together earlier. I always do well and somehow pull it off. I have always been this way, even in college.

But, when I honestly can't do that then I put together a list of to-dos. Even small ones like "call so and so" "set up meeting", little stuff. That usually gets the ball rolling because I'm pretty proud of myself for getting stuff done.

:-)

I'm looking forward to the responses to your question as well. I have zero motivation at work; I don't have a bad job, but it's not my "calling." My plan is to finish grad school in May and then quit my job and find something better to do. When the going gets tough, I apparently quit!

Ha! This has been my MO for awhile. I have a great gig and I like the place, most of the people and my clients. I'm just stuck in a rut of tough training and this project that's meant a lot of "outside-the-box" thinking for me (to use a WAY overused cliche). So I'm a bit drained. This is definitely not my calling either, but it is a good deal and I'm learning, so that's got to count for something.

I'm just doing what needs to be done until I can financially and emotionally try to tackle law school. I'm finding, however, that the longer I wait the more life is getting in the way and diminishing that dream.

And believe me, I TOTALLY get the humor of me asking ST about work motivation....I keep waiting for corporate to ask me what the hell ST is and why I spend as much time here as on email! Apparently skimming the aerodynamics of the P4 helps me calculate reserve estimates for my client's incurred but not reported health claims.

Don't wait too long. Remember, your life is now.

Personally, I lost most of my motivation when my direct superior let me take the fall for her mistakes. I'm starting a new postion in 3 weeks. Same office, new title, new responsibilities, best of all- new reporting structure. I'm hoping this solves my motivaion problem.

The fact that a bunch of my friends and former co-workers have just gotten the ax is also a bit motivating.

Yay, Katy!

For me, I's severely lacking in motivation right now. I've had my responsibilities triple in the last month but luckily I'm still working only 35-40 hours per week. The reason because of that is that I'm just not doing some things that I'm suppose to be doing. I am not going out of my way to start anything. I'm doing what I'm told and I'm not putting for the extra effort. I'm trying really hard to find another job and I'm busy with school. Work at this point just doesn't interest me. Also, I've been here for awhile now so that when something is asked of me, I usually start working out how to do it in my head before the end of the request is finished. Part of that is having a long winded boss that keeps asking for the same data with this variable tweaked or that one changed a bit.

Patience isn't a virtue. Patience is a waste of my time. EXACTLY!!!

I have the long-winded thing COMBINED with the people that just don't get it...I consider myself fairly competent with computers, but these people are PROFESSIONALS at making toolbars disappear! Or changing their font (with no CLUE how they did it) and being completely incapable of changing it back. Seriously, how DOES that happen? How do you get to a VP level without some simple, functional knowledge? Weren't these people the pee-ons at some point????

I have no patience and that is well-documented around here. Luckily, I also have a PR degree, so I can hold my tongue when necessary. Otherwise, I might just have killed them all (or at the very least made them all angry) by now....

Try dealing with that incompetance at a large software company. How the hell did they even get hired if they can't use an email client????

I'm pissed at my boss because of this stuff. Every time I want to change our 1:1 in Outlook, he ends up changing the time for all of the occurrences. Fuck no, you asstard! I wanted you to change just that one instance, not all of them shit for brains! It may also be because he doesn't read any emails that I send him, listen to what I say, or just doesn't pay attention at all. Man, I need a new boss.

1:1....that's a novel concept. I think I call that lunch - EVERY DAY. My boss is actually really cool, about 88% of the time...it's the other 12% that's a zinger.

I couldn't deal with it if it was a software company...all we do is broker insurance..but I would still think that email should be understood by now...

The good news - the roommate cleaned the house today and made it smell nice!! And then I brought in my TT bike, stuck in on the trainer, brought my tri shoes inside and spent an hour sweating on his clean floor.

okay...here is my deal:

undergrad was done and the plan was masters & phd...instead moved around some and then..

back to home state to law school...

now, 4 years later...not so sure it is what I want to be doing... personal issues...and....

pondering going back for that original plan.

I'm gonna be 100 before I figure this out...

What do you want to get your Masters and Ph.D. in?

"I'm gonna be 100 before I figure this out... " I honestly believe that I may never figure it out, but that's cool. I remember reading a book where the author said that the average person changes careers seven times. And that it's okay to not really know what you want to do (i.e., not knowing what your "calling" is). The most exciting and personable people in his life were his friends that were in their 50s and still didn't know what they wanted to be :) It's certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

Now that Halloween is approaching, I've decided that I will be a "steal from my coworkers' Halloween candy dishes" type of person this month. Next month, it'll be something different.

So, to satisfy my own curiosity - Does Auburn apply to any of the schooling or are you just a Tiger by birth? Either way, completely acceptable and encouraged - born and raised in Indiana but have been a die-hard follower of Aubie since I can remember. Family is all in AL. It's hard to drive a car that has IU license plates with an Auburn plate cover!

Changing mid-stream is what keeps life interesting and keeps our brains fresh. If we settle into the same old routine we become stagnant and stop learning and stop challenging the world around us. I just have to find a way to keep paying my mortgage and car payments while also fenagling tuition. If only I could make money racing...

Auburn by birth, family and by undergrad! Funny...one of my closest friends went to IU... took him to his first Auburn game this year. Unfortunately our offense isn't where it used to be, but he enjoyed it I think. Even asked if he should wear orange! He's learnin'! He swam at IU.
