Big races on northern east coast?
I am looking for a few big races to boost up my USAT rank for next year. I competed in several races with about 300 entrants or so last year, but the bigger races, the more points. I'm looking for races with at least 500 entrants. Thanks.

www.trifind.com has a good index by state. It a good place to research different races. Hope this helps.

Your best bet is a very popular 1/2 Ironman. (anything with more than 1000 people is ideal, but the next threshold is 500). There's Timberman at (700 people) in New Hampshire and Tupper Lake in upstate NY (650-ish). Of the two, Tupper lake will probably have a weaker field.

On the oly front, the only race with 1000+ that I can think of is the NYC Triathlon, with 1400 people it'll generate a lot of points for an Oly. Pretty cool race, imho. It'll be interesting to see what happens now that the Elite Nat'l Champs have moved on and the proposed NYC2012 course is now totally within Central Park. In 2001 this field was killer tough; last year the field was not quite as tough, but it's still no slouch.

As you probably know, you need to be careful of races that allow amateurs into the Elite wave, you will not receive ranking points for these races (the Time Out Production races in the NE corridor allow this; from what I can tell, very well-run, fun races.) Here are the USAT ranking criteria (including explanation of the am/elite rule).
