There has only been a State of Israel since the late 1940's. Not that there wasn't some animosity before that, but there was a time when Muslims and Jews got along.

Except that inasmuch as the modern state of Israel (and, specifically, the way it was created as fiat by the European powers after WWII) embodies the ongoing conflict between East and West, as played out in the place they converge. It's not about Judaism vs. Islam as much as it is about West vs. East.


Of course, the history of the region since 1940 hasn't helped matters much either . . .
