Things have changed for me depending upon what I was addressing at different points in my life - now as a 45 year old getting into endurance sports:

antioxidants: lycopene from tomatoes - most days - i have missed some; grape seed extract again most days; astraxanthin - most days - these are for recovery and two of them specifically also help protect skin from damage given that racing I am not taking time in transition to reapply sunscreen....
natural antiinflammatories - celadrin (esterified fatty acids); low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (injuv) - both for joint protection

multivitamin a few days per week and lately iron citrate or iron picolinate due to anemia

occasionally a thyroid support formula that has minerals, b-vits and bacopa

sporadic - theanine (amino acid causes alpha wave production)

usually I consume enough calcium in the form of dairy and soy if not I also take calcium and vit D in addition to what is in multi. plethora of research on all of this....

HI Cat Is this for the skin? I have never heard of it. Is it a pill? I'd be interested in that. I rub Vit C ester on my skin after every outdoor session. Thanks

yup both the Lycopene-tomato complex and astraxanthan have data about delayed onset of redness and the lycopene has data on prevention of DNA damage that leads to skin cancer.

lycopene from tomatoes (often has names like lycomato) has phytoene and phytofluene - one absorbs UVA the other UVB. They prevent the reactive oxygen species that get formed from the oxidative stress that the sun gives. Since there is also data on lycomato and heart health etc it is clear that as an antioxidant it is about 60x more potent than vitamin C.

astraxanthin is the pigment in salmon that gives it its pink color and is its natural sun protection. their studies showed delayed redness.

the injuv (HA) that I also take for joint protection has a bonus of skin aid - HA is what restylane is (commonly injected into wrinkle

Ok, like I'm sad here. I have to take > 650mg of iron daily cuz my iron levels are pretty much in the toilet. Other than iron
I have no xplode for tuf workouts and sometimes I take a multi vit and vit B tabs dependent on my energy levels and
where my immunity is.

I've been taking astraxanthin for a couple of months, mostly because I read about the sunscreen benefits and was given a couple months supply so I figured I'd give it a try. I rode the other day and realized about 1 hour into my ride I forgot sunscreen (it was the first sunny day in a LONG time). When i got home 6 hours later I didn't have a sunburn, or any tan lines from my shorts. I think I'll probably keep taking it since it seems to be working for a sunscreen and I spend a lot of time outside in the sun.

i take rainbow lights multi-vitamin, calcium (bones), omega-3's (cause i hate fish), st.johns wart (for mood, alternative to prozac), and echinacia (because everyone is always sick at college)

calcium is easy to sneak in your diet these days. i drink calcium fortified orange juice when i want something sweet, get some from dariy, and take the tablets.

I recently started some new eating habits and they seem to working ok, but I am looking for some more supplements to add also. Breakfast is a fruit smoothie- ice, 1 banana, 1 cup frozen mixed berries (no sugar), 1 tblsp flaxseed; 1 tblsp wheat bran, 1 cup V8 splash or fusion (which ever the kids haven't drank up on me). I would like to add some protein powder and some good bacteria supplements- SUGGESTIONS? Lunch is a salad (greens mixed with spinach, nuts, dried cherries or cranberries, vinegrette dressing. Dinner is what the family is eating- protein, vegetables, and starch. I usually have two snacks during the day- fruit, string cheese, nuts, or popcorn.

Women's 1 a day and typically drink a protein shake for breakfast: blueberries, banana, milk, and the gnc whey protein and soy protein.

I'm intrigued by the astraxanthin now. I've gotten burned a few times, once badly. So kinda worried about sun stuff now. I love this forum! Gotta check astraxanthin out now...
