The episode that dropped last night is so good - their visit to Wrexham. I love this show.

it's 25 years since i lived in the UK so anyone living there may have a more current perspective.

i think there is a big difference between clubs like Wrexham, that were traditionally in the football league, and clubs like Salford City, (or Harrogate for example) that weren't. There would have been thousands of passionate supporters in Wrexham, people who lived and breathed the team. Then they were relegated and put in the same league as the part-timers. Just getting Wrexham back into League 2, then maybe League 1, and staying there would be transformative for the town.

In places where there wasn't traditionally a league club, such as Salford, it will be different. i bet most football fans in Salford are not that invested in Salford City as they already had different football teams they supported before the Man U guys arrived.

I think that's a great point.
I grew up, and now live in, (different) small towns with a 'non-league' clubs as we'd term it in England (and parts of Wales !) - but folks around both would by-and-large support the league team in the big town (small city) 10 miles away as their league team. Whilst my local semi-pro team (in about the 7th tier) getting into the Premiership would be a right larf, folks supporting the nearby league team since they were 3 years old will continue to support that league team. Football support is very tribal compared to almost anything else.

(Anything below the 4th tier - current called 'league 2' - is what would be referred to as 'Non-League' ( yes even non-league still play in leagues ! It's a throwback to when the top 4 tiers were under the control of the 'football league' as a separate organisation / entity to the game's English governing body the Football Association (FA).

when i worked in Horsham in the late 90s there were quite a few guys about my age in the labs who were from the bit of south London directly north of the site (maybe 30 miles). Logically they were in the prime catchment area for Wimbledon FC who were then in the premier league. But they were typically Palace supporters (or West Ham for some reason) because when they started following the game in the early 70s Wimbledon were a non-league team. Ultimately of course Wimbledon FC ended up moving to Milton Keynes - presumably related to fans in south london already having a team.

i don't think the potential for growth in Salford City is that high. People in greater manchester aren't looking for a team to support so building a new fan base will be a challenge. Different to if they had invested in Stockport County on the other side of the city where there will already be a loyal fan base. Even then i think the potential for growth is limited because of the proximity to manchester. Ryan and Rob chose well.

The final three episodes of season 1 have dropped. They are maybe the best three episodes of the whole thing. Very glad to hear that season 2 is a go.

I'm a bit behind after the multiple episodes last week... but here's an interesting thread on their investment and impact.

Hell, I'm from Wales and have a hard time understanding some of them (and the Scousers).
My wife was amused because she said she feels the same way when I get talking to my family and friends.

I met three guys that were here from Sunderland quite some time ago. When they were talking to me I generally understood them. When they spoke to each other, it might as well have been Greek.

that bit where the Grimsby chairman/owner spoke for a few minutes was a reminder that Wrexham and Grimsby and their football teams have so much in common. For every one of those passionate Wrexham fans the series has focused on there will be an equivalent in Grimsby. Even the chairman seems a lot like Ryan and Rob - only a local businessman.

Wrexham play Coventry in the 3rd round of the FA cup this weekend. Coventry are in the Championship (second tier) so three above Wrexham. Be interesting to see how they get on. Normally this would be a massive day for any non-league team, and getting 45% of the gate receipts from this game alone would have a huge impact on a club in that league's finances but Wrexham are a bit different. Although the chance of a win and maybe getting a premier league team in the next round is still a huge incentive for a club with history like Wrexham.

Don't think the Wrexham coach will rest players.....the good players will want to test themselves against better opponents. More chance Coventry will in order to focus on a push for a possible play-off place.

I agree. Probably unpopular opinion but I thought sunderland til I die did this much better as have many other small town sports docs. I find the story telling in wrexham choppy and unfocused and I don’t really get to know the actual team that well.

And as a football player and fan I find it annoying how little Ryan Reynolds knows about the sport - yet is an owner.

I liked Sunderland Til I Die better too. They scored 2 in extra time to win today.

I stopped watching Welcome to Wrexham after maybe 4 episodes. I think it went downhill fast and don't care to spend the time. But I'm following the team and hope they can make promotion this season.

We didn't stop watching but certainly hit the fast forward button in the later episodes. Too much extra fluff. I wanted more focus on the players.

i like the community stories. i think showing the importance of the team to the town shows that the mission is about the community, not just the team

As a brit (although living in the US for 25 years) who grew up in a northern mining town with the football team bouncing around between the third and fourth tiers most of the time i was there ......but still with the back 10 pages of the local weekly paper devoted to coverage of the team, building mediocre players up to be invincible superstars; and the totally devoted fans ....i can see so much in common with those folks in Wrexham, and can feel the desperation of those fans. It's just a bit of luck here and there that makes the difference between being out of the league like Chesterfield, Halifax, Notts County and Wrexham or in the EPL like Bournemouth or Brighton.

And the question remains. where were you.
