To do with his racing. He'ed never let others get away. Hence he would be gripping onto them. Or something like that.

Once he had you in his sights on the run, you were within his "grip" and it was all over. Ask Dave about it....

If you get a chance read the book "IRON WILL". It takes from the early

days of IRONMAN to about 1995 I think. But it gets in depth about the

early days when the big 4 (Scott, Tinley, Molina, Allen) would dominate

all the races. In this book there is a part where the nicknames of the Big 4

became what they are today.



Again, a good read........................IRON WILL

Legend has it - and maybe Mike Plumb knows this better then me from riding with MA - but at the end of the long rides Mark would just reach down, and 'grip' his handlebars and take off on everyone. They said once he reached down, you were in the 'grip of death' - meaning it would be painful to try and stay with MA and most of the time it would be pointless. The guy was an animal.
