this is why alpine touring is awesome. ski up hill (hard like running). lock boots at top and ski down

That is a possibility. There is certainly more impact going downhill. However if you can go downhill without any discomfort, it will help to open up your stride. Wearing shoes with good cushioning like Hoka One One can make the descents more doable.

I've used parking garages at times when they would have little traffic (to avoid both cars and exhaust fumes) and found it to be a really user-friendly way to accomplish your goal. I took the stairs down and allowed that to be the recovery.

A few times I parked at the top and put out some weights, so I could run up, do something like lightweight squats or walking lunges, then would take the stairs down and do it again.
