IM 70.3 Japan Back On! Oct 18.

Emails just went out. Booked my hotel a few blocks from the bike pickup. So glad it looks like I'll get to race this year...especially since I quit drinking and got down to 10% body fat, so no beer gut in the tri-suit this year and I have some ENVE 7.8 SES race wheels coming soon, so my Wilier will be looking stupid fast.

Anyone else doing LIXIL IRONMAN 70.3 Centrair Chita Peninsula, Japan (what a mouthful) or done it in the past?
Bike course looks slow with like 20 different out and backs and elevation...

We'll see. Davao was postponed twice so I transferred to Cebu. Goseong 70.3 was canceled. Berlin marathon is postponed or canceled (TBD).

I'll be surprised if Chita happens, but if Cebu gets cancelled then I'll consider signing up

Oct is a long time away so it might happen
There will be "travel bubbles" forming and so much talks happening now. As long as you reside in a country that has controlled the virus, it should be part of the bubble.....Racing will come back

They have rescheduled dozens of races to later in the year. Doesn’t mean any of them are going to actually happen.

Does anyone know what went on in this race? I saw something about a bike course change, and the results show a column for 'bike laps used', ranging from 0 to 3. I'm just an interested viewer, but I'm confused!

I know that during the bike portion there was an accident and a 50+ male was killed.

It may have altered the race after the accident.

Basically they canceled the bike leg after the accident. They started the run leg after they cleared the bike course and got everyone back to transition. This took about 1.5 hours.

No confirmed report of the 52 year old male passing away as yet. Nothing about the accident has come from the IM 70.3 Japan race office. I really hope that they address this very soon and issue a statement.

As for the race results, a friend who raced there this received this from IM Asia Pacific.

We have now posted the results here - https://www.ironman.com/im703-japan-results

You will see that each age group results vary depending on the number of bike laps each age group was able to complete.

The results were calculated based on Swim/T1/Number of Bike laps completed for AG/Run

I live in Japan and have avoided doing this race since it started because of reports that the bike course is dangerous and overly complicated. This year due to Covid, they condensed the course but still allowed 800 to race. Avoid at all costs. There are a bunch of non IM brand long distance races in Japan that are fantastic, mainly on islands where they can control the bike courses far better.

My club is now drafting a letter to the JTU (Japan Triathlon Union) about how dangerous the bike course was. One member has already contacted IM Asia with his concerns.

I've certainly never heard anything good about the bike course either.

Fingers crossed the athlete involved makes a full recovery.

Thanks for the update.

Hey,

Just wondering; what are the best races in Japan that you think are worth traveling there for? I have taken up learning Japanese for fun with the full intention of visiting there again in the future, hopefully when Covid normalizes (so maybe in 2022?). I really want to have an excuse to go back to Japan but to also race something there. I saw there was some cool bike races in Okinawa, which is also somewhere I really enjoyed.

Alternatively I may decide to do IM Taiwan and just jump over to Japan after and make a trip out of that.

Thanks!

Here's list of what I think are the biggest and best LD races in Japan:
  1. Strongman Japan The best race in Japan by far. It's the Japanese Kona or Roth. But it seems it will be cancelled in 2021.
  2. Sado Astroman They have both a long (a tad longer than Iron Distance) and a middle distance.
  3. Goto Nagasaki Baramon King Also long and middle. Was the venue for IM Japan for many years.
  4. Kaike Shorter swim and bike than Iron Distance. (the only one on this list that I have not done)
  5. Miyajima Woodman Middle distance with an A to B swim and brutal uphill bike and run. I love this race!

Ironman Japan finally got back to a teammate who raced there and who asked them about the condition of the injured man.

'The injured athlete' has regained consciousness and is recovering.'

Great to hear!
