new Scott Addict RC, Sram Force AXS brake pad overhang question
Quote | Reply
Hey all,

anyone out there also owning a 2020 Scott Addict with Sram Force AXS.....I think it is an awesome bike and I really like it. One thing that drives me nuts however is that both brake pads front and rear are not aligning properly with the end of the rotor. Each pad is basically overhanging by about 1.5 mm. Obviously, these 1.5 mm of pad remain and are not rubbed off while braking....

Have others also observed the same? Will that be a problem down the road? Are there 160mm rotors that come in a little bigger which would make the pad to be cover by the rotor?

Thanks a lot.
Uli

Could you post a picture? It could be that your calipers are mounted with an unnecessary spacer for your disc size.

I am currently building one. As someone mentioned, it could be that you used unnecessary adapters for your rotor size. I think the bike is designed to be ridden with 160 rotors front (no adapter) and back (w/ adapter). Also did you get the good bolt length? It's a shame Scott is not shipping them with the bike

I wish I had used the wrong spacers but unfortunately I didn't. No adapter in front (caliper attaches to the fork directly) and back 160mm postmount Sram. I had a guy from a bike shop look at it and he confirmed that brakes were installed correctly. They didn't have another Addict Force in the store. A Shimano version did not show this overhang....Question now is, who has messed up their tolerances Sram or Scott....
I have attached a picture where you can see the overhanging brake pad. Please let me know if your pads will extend above the rotor as well, that would be very interesting to see.

Thanks
U

PS: Any yeah, finding the right size bolts to attach the callipers required me to visit several department stores to find the odd size...

I don’t see the attachement you mentioned. I’ll get to that point of the build by the end of the week so I’ll send you a pic so you can compare :-)

This isn't all that uncommon. If everything is assembled correctly, you will want to have the brake mounts of your frame faced down to the correct depth. A *good* bike shop should have the tool needed to do this.

...I know that this can be done on aluminum frames but I have never heard of sanding down brake mounts on a carbon frame? Are you sure, that can be done?

Not only *can* it be done, but I own the tool to do it, and I've done it. It also *needs* to be done on a surprisingly large percentage of frames. We'll have an article about this in the near future in the wrenchwork column on the front page of the site.

A flat file would work.

It would work, but it would be dumb to do so.

I've faced a set of disc brake mounts with a flat file, and I definitely wouldn't suggest this as a solution. Unless someone has done a *lot* of work of this type, it's really unlikely they will wind up satisfied with the results.

Hey,
thanks a lot for your feedback. So what will you do about it? Just leave it as it is? I think I will just make peace with this stupid brake pad alignment and sand down pads once in a while....

Hey,

Yeah I'm not too worried about it, braking is fluid and powerful so that's ok. Other than that this bike is really great from the first couple of rides on it :-)
