It will be canceled officially. At least that's the info I got as I don't get along to much with the organization..
I heard it will be tomorrow.

Its not oficial yet so I might be wrong. But I think my sources are correct

You sadly confirm what I have known, I think that Ironman this year had to cancel early all the races. In Portugal they have accept athlete until last week ... not good!

I've heard the same... :-(

Such a shame,, I was more than ready for it. Let's wait of course for any official announcement. But there's little to no hope anymore.

Ironman cascais organization is a bunch of idiots and liars that just like to show-off.
WTC need to understand that they deal with athletes/humans not containers.

There you go..
Lets see what happens
I wasn't racing but know a gazillion of people that would.

Another local triathlon took place last weekend despite the general group restrictions. Pros are also seemingly still able to register, which would be weird if it wasn't going ahead. All speculations at this point but there are some positive signs...

Lots of rumors and negativity around IM Portugal (especially on the FB group).

It might be cancelled, but until it is officially cancelled, it IS going on.

Just received the cancelation email (23oct21)

To be fair, they say we can also ask for a credit voucher which can then be redeemable for a refund... so quite "nice" from them (and closer to what "Challenge" is doing)

I fully agree! Nothing but compliments for providing that opportunity.

Has anyone got any insights in to the course and any top tips. All being well I'm hoping to be on the start line in 2021. Thank you in advance.

Thank you. Whats you thoughts on the road surface and bike course? I believe it's going in the opposite direction, hilly section first for 2021.

Also how is the run run course? It's looks straight forward enough, but it is it really flat, or more of a roller?

Any other thoughts or top tips welcomed, line places to eat etc.

road surface is pretty good (except as you approach Lisbon, could be better there), but overall I'd say it's fine, I never put much stock in it. Two things I would say about the road bit, though:
  1. West of the event, as you go by next to the sea, it can be very windy. Very. So depending on how you fair with wind/how deep your wheels are, you should really be careful (the wind typically comes from the sea side, so on your flank)
  2. I would hardly call it a flat course, but rather a rolling hills course, with a good hilly section (first year I ran out of gears on one of the climbs). Around 1000m+ for the 70.3 course.

You can see my attempt here.

Running:

Again, a lot of rolling hills/some uncomfortable/steep climbing. Around 150m+ for the 70.3 course. This is what Elevate had to say about it:

23.6% climbing
55.5% flat
20.9% downhill
4.7 KM Climbing distance
11.8 KM Flat distance
4.5 KM Downhill distance
0.1% Avg grade
38.6% Max uphill grade
-30.1% Max downhill grade

A big thank you for the information, which will help with my preparations. Knowing about the wind on the bike and hills on the run are gold, as I've not seen this mention any where.

happy to help!

If 70.3 is your jam, there's also Challenge Lisboa (pan flat, very quick course) and Setúbal Triathlon (similar road elevation to IM (roads not as good), but flat run), and on a beautiful location.

Thanks, I've an athlete I coach heading to the Challenge event and been in Lisbon back when the ITU had races there. I just hoping the racing will be going ahead next year. 🤞
