House burned down-where to move?
I am looking for ideas, our house and ranch burned down in the CZU August lightning complex fire- all the family and animals are fine, but I just sold my practice and commercial property it was on, it will probably take 3 years to rebuild. At our place we could go out for trail runs and mountain bike rides out the front door. I don’t want to spend the next three years in a trailer or an evacuee hotel -with our house gone and practice sold I am trying to figure out where to move to get any of the following- road biking, mountain biking or trail running. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

How far are you willing to go?

HMB and SLO come to mind. Boulder, if you don’t mind the winters and want more for your $$$.

Sorry to hear about your loss, it must be tough.
I also think SLO is a good choice.
From there you have access to Big Sur, Paso Robles, Santa Barbara county.
Tons of great riding there.

Certainly not a description of Boulder, IMO...

Why not do a north south strategy - Crested Butte and Flagstaff or Texas for winter?

Thanks, I didn’t even think about Flagstaff, I was thinking about Bend-but I think a lot of other people are thinking of that now also.

How much house space do you need(kids), and what kind of animals are you bringing? We have all that and more here, I may be in a situation to be renting out some temporary space.

It’s relative. Coming from NorCal, Boulder is a bargain (even if it’s expensive on a national scale).

my wife and i, and monty (on this forum) live a pretty remote life. we're on acreage, about 15 or so acres, and you mention animals. depending on the animals you have, this may render 2 locations - summer and winter - difficult. further, if you did transport large animals back and forth, maybe it's my bad ranch management, but the plumbing required to withstand (for example) winters is problematic. if you have horses, your plumbing goes way out there and it comes up for them to drink, and when it comes up it is subject to freezes. you best have a very good system of draining plumbing if you have a winter residence that accommodates large animals that you vacate for a period of time.

beyond that, you need to decide what's important to you. the more remote you get, you give up: culture, broadband, swimming, training partners, and the sorts of stores you'd patronize for the kind of food you eat. we moved where we did 18 years ago, and civilization has slowly come to us. we are remarkably remote considering we are now 25 minutes from our usual competition pool, 1 hour from a pair of decent airports, 1:30 from LAX, an hour and a quarter from a world class classical music venue, opera, the hollywood bowl and the greek theater (etc). we are close enough so to have a fairly steady stream of workout visitors.

but this "far enough away" while "close enough in" is a tricky calculus to get right.

if i was in your shoes, knowing what you do and where you live, i would consider:

auburn over to grass valley and nevada city; up to the sierra valley, with a special look at calpine, sattley and sierraville, and then over to truckee, and down to glenshire/hirschdale.

if you got in your car, drove to auburn, then to nevada city, up hwy 49 to calpine and the sierra valley, over hwy 89 toward truckee, check out the estates around prosser reservoir, head down hwy 80 a ways toward reno and then get off at the boca reservoir exit, travel up through hirshdale and glenshire, ending at truckee, and then take hwy 80 back home, you'd see much of what i'm writing about.

of course i'm projecting what i like on top of you; but i assume that animals, bikes, and stuff like that are interests we both share. most of these areas is also large animal country, depending on what you specialize in, and if you want to take it back up.

Damn, didn't realize it was that bad in NorCal. I will just stomp out my dreams of ever moving out West right now. hah.

For another perspective, Hendersonville/Brevard area of N.C. also meets what you are looking for. Tryon N.C. is near that area also so definitely horse country.

That’s a great idea- I will do that drive, we do have a daughter in Reno and one in Placerville so it would be in their area- I am admittedly a bit paranoid about fire now- that is our hesitation about the Placerville area. Thanks for tips on freezing water supply- we have been spoiled with weather here.

placerville is a great place. a little low in elevation for my taste. pollock pines is about the lowest i'd go, myself. if you're going to do the daughter loop, reno then placerville, you might want to check out the sly park area, proximate to or part of pollock pines. you have lots of trails, a big fat lake. a road that takes you over to the kirkwood/carson pass area, and access to the ice house and union reservoirs. i could live there real easily.

i hear you about fires. i've been smoked out for the last couple of days because of the fires burning all around me. so, it's always there. you do the best you can, with your home construction, defensible space, your choice of immediate geography of the area in which you live.

If you don’t mind shitty draft beer, salt lake valley is a great option. Depending on where you live, you can get a lot for your money and have access from your door to great activities year round.

Came to say this - if you can deal with some of the "nuances" of living in SLC, it could be an awesome place - and HUGE bang for buck

If you want to go about 50 miles south of PP - I know someone who will likely be selling their place outside of Pine Grove. They had horses, so everything is already there.

Durango is nice if you are looking at Colorado. And it is cheaper that Boulder which everyone seems to be heading to. BUT, winters like everywhere in Colorado can be rough. Be prepared for a lot of Zwift indoor training when the snow is heavy or take up cross-country skiing.

Also, I'd guess a city location would also really depend on what type of employment you plan to have. Many of these great towns just don't have a lot of employment opportunities. But if you plan to be self-employed that might not be an issue.

I live in Broomfield and work in Louisville (both right next to Boulder), there are plenty of towns just outside of Boulder that are just as nice and way less expensive. Also, the winters aren't bad here. Most of the time it snows one day and it's gone the next with our normal highs in the winter in the high 30's, low 40's, so nothing crazy.

Unless you want a lot of city stuff... then the road biking is better if you aren't in/near a city. If you like the outdoors in general, it's better to not be near a city.

One thing I discovered in my travels and research is that CA weather isn't that great unless you are near the southern (south of the Bay) coast. If you go inland very far you have hot dry summers and cold wet winters... and smog.

There is a high altitude section of southern TX (Alpine, Fort Davis), NM (Ruidoso, Silver City), and AZ (Bisbee, Sierra Vista) that has a mild and sunny year round climate, with more rain in the summer than winter. All are pretty small; Sierra Vista is the biggest at ~40k. RE is affordable in all.

I live in Ruidoso, NM. It's at 7k ft in a pine forest. 10k people and lots of tourism... golf, horse race track, outdoor recreation (lots of new MTB trails), ski resort near, casinos, etc. Avg high 82 in July, and 50 in Jan. No smog. We bought a nice 16 acre parcel for $80k, and a 1700 sq ft house in town for $160k.

Fallon, Nevada. Far enough away from things, but decent enough town to buy groceries.

There's so many ways to slice the SLC cake that it would be almost pointless to list them all. Your best course of action is to take a trip there and drive around. Really depends on what you're looking for. If you want to maintain the quasi-rural life I suggest looking up by Ogden. There's an island and state park in the middle of the Great Salt Lake... I think it's called Deer Island?... that gives you access to amazing nearly-car-free road riding. Mountain bike riding abounds in the general area as does trail running.
