Phlex Edge - First Impression

So far one workout in. A few things are buggy like the device name changing on it's own when I synch it. Customer support is excellent either on live chat or email.

1. Form factor, small and compact. I wear my cap over my google straps and it covers the back of the device. I never really felt it dragging. If the goggles are really tight it does push on the temple a bit but it was fine.

https://www.instagram.com/...?igshid=87regoscinh4

2. The app is quirky (android). Don't try to synch a work out if it doesn't have one loaded. The app was trying to load a "workout" from the night before and didn't accept my first try.

3. It's simple to use during a workout. Once it's on you press the swim button to mark a new set. Want your HR zone hit the HR button. I am going to try a small locker mirror (attached to the blocks either a magnet or string) and see if the coach mode lights are better. I think the unit it capable of more and it will see software/firmware driven improvements (I wouldn't be surprised if it could be programmed to vibrate at a predetermined pace similar to a tempo trainer in pace mode).

4. Workout upload is not as quick as a garmin. There are 2 steps here. 1st the data comes off the "head unit" and 2nd the app processes the data in Phlex's server. This takes a bit of time (5-10 minutes). The feedback data is not localized on your device. You have to load it on the app every time (not cached). The upside is it will recalculate your HR zones on a workout if they were put in incorrectly or say if the device was loaned out the user didn't have their own account.

5. The feedback data is damn good. It automatically detects your stroke, repeat times and your intervals. There were a few small glitches in my feedback but nothing terrible. It did detect my backstroke kick as backstroke swim but Fly kick on my back did show up as kicking in my stats.

A short set to test the automatic detection...

6. The metrics like distance per stroke account for your underwater phase. Again there is probably more being captured than the software is currently giving back. I won't be shocked if there is an advanced version of the app for swim teams on a subscription (things like time under water, kicks off the wall, turn index/time).

7. It's supposed to integrate with Strava. Mine is not synching there. It may have be my strava is attached to my google account though and it gives errors when I have tried to connect them.

I have more screens posted on Instagram.

A long term usage review (3 months) is coming...

I bought a couple for the swim team and yes still very quirky. We are using IOS and workouts are repeated in the app unless you hard reset the device after every upload. Hopefully progress will come quickly, certainly NOT up to par with garmin or training peaks. We've had them for a week and have had daily contact with support...

The software is less reliable at this point than Garmin but the swimming specific data is far better in my opinion. Garmin doesn't account for a lot of things like underwater kicks. Phlex did a good job with its auto detection of sets, strokes and intervals.

Edit. Swimming Australia looks to be an adopting Phlex.

TritonWear is good but software license fees...

Edit again.

How does this compare to the form swim goggles with polar oh1? I think the goggles can display your heart rate in real time while you swim.

You can set the zones up to vibrate either automatically or at the press of the HR button. The zones are also displayed by a coloured light for a coach to see. I want to test a locker mirror attached to the blocks and see that is better.

I have yet to see what Form outputs afterwards and how good it is with non free.

The data and metrics are definitely cool to see. Hopefully they sell well enough to stick around and improve over the next year, and maybe even get Garmin to step up their game.

To say the least. We have two of them. One locks up and won't turn off after a workout. This started yesterday morning and repeated in the PM session. I have master reset the device and today reloaded the already up-to-date firmware. Support is apparently off today, but training continues even on Christmas Eve!

AND Phlex support has us master resetting both of the devices after every workout so that duplicate and triplicate workouts aren't recorded in the profiles. One of the two swimmers has, according to the phlex app, swum 38 miles in the past 3 days. Phlex has really improved his volume!

We have used these for 10 swims so far and have completely lost two sessions of data due to lockups.

I'm kicking myself for not doing my usual research. If I knew it was still in Beta I wouldn't have purchased. We saw Cody Miller's endorsement and bought two of them on his word.

After reloading the firmware to the same version, the device worked for two swims before failing again. Totally sucks! No support online again.

I had one workout duplicate but it's been better this week. They pulled the zero workouts out of the database.

I want an export feature... at the very least an excel sheet of the workout...

I have been resetting it after every upload with success. I wake it up before each swim by plugging it in for a few seconds.

Hi Everyone!

Ryan Rosenbaum here from Phlex. I wanted to leave a message on this thread letting you all know how appreciative we at Phlex are for being so involved in the startup process. Swimmers like you make us look good by dreaming up things you'd like to see the EDGE do, and from there, all we have to do is implement.

As of today we have app updates for both iOS and Android in the store that address plenty.
- Hard reset no longer needed to wipe workouts from your device
- Total accuracy improvements
- Strava integration fixed
- Calendar view polished

This is part of the excitement of Phlex going forward. You dream it, we do it (to the best of our abilities). We are working on some BIG things for the new year, but are also interested in hearing what you would like to see the most as the EDGE experience grows. We are very excited to be paving the way with swimmers like you.

Thanks again for sharing your truthful thoughts on the EDGE, we greatly appreciate it.

It does HR, but for several years all the "real swimmers" have been saying swim HR is a useless metric, when the Garmin strap was discussed.

Most of the other metrics I get from my Garmin by using SportTracks.mobi to see the results.

I'm closer to the feathered end of the spear than the point.

who's been saying that? Not me. Swimmers have been taking heart rates manually for years, a reliable device that doesn't get in your way when swimming which could show HR would be welcome

I do think that the devices to collect HR haven't been great. Maybe better now with things like phlex and the polar goggle mounted sensor, which are quite unobstrusive.

The thinking was HR was useless when chest straps were concerned. Even the newer garmin ones that stick better won't stay on properly at the higher speeds. Sure it stays on at 2:00/100, not so much below 1:10/100.

Ryan,

Thanks for the personal call when I was having problems in December. Been running fairly well the last few sessions.

Edit:

Is the Strava going to load past swims?

Hi Ryan and others,

Not sure if you're still around to check this. I've submitted a ticket a few days ago and still have not heard back.

My app (Android) will indicate that it is downloading the workout but then it'll disappear. When I try again, it'll tell me there was no workout and to head to the pool.
I notice that my workouts don't always process. When it tries to reprocess, it'll fail.

Is there any way to pull these workouts from the device?
Anyone else have had similar issues and found fixes?

Thanks!
