1). Strip down to your skivvies and stand in front of a mirror.

2). Pull skivvies out at waistband.

3). Reach in and "feel around".

4). If you find "something", you might be a guy.

5). If you don't find "something", you still could be a guy (never underestimate the power of cold water induced shrinkage).

6). March out into the living room, puff up your chest and announce to all, "I am a ____"!

Is there a typical proportion of leg to torso length that would help me determine this?

I would guess the most basic would be to compare your inseam (measured by jamming a ~1" hardcover book up into your crotch while barefoot and standing againast a wall and measuring from the floor to the top of the book) to your height. I'm long leg short torso and 34"/5'10".
